Happy Veterans Day 2020
Veterans Day is a special day for America to celebrate, honor, and offer gratitude to all of our United States Military Veterans.
On November 11, 1919, one year after armed combat formally ended during World War I, President Woodrow Wilson sent a message to America on the first Armistice Day. This message said in part:
“Out of this victory there arose new possibilities of political freedom and economic concert. The war showed us the strength of great nations acting together for high purposes…to us in America the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service…”
In 1945, World War II veteran Raymond Weeks proposed the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who died in World War I. Nine years later in 1954, Congress acted to replace “Armistice” with “Veterans” and our country has celebrated Veterans Day ever since.
