Here's what's happening in December!
|
|
Friday, Dec. 3
It all starts with Night on the Town from 6-9 p.m. Downtown streets will be closed, merchants and restaurants will be open, and the festivities will be going on! We'll also be hosting the annual Christmas tree lighting on Bay Street.
Saturday, Dec. 4
10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.: The Beaufort History Museum will hold a re-enactment at the Arsenal courtyard, 713 Craven St., to commemorate the 160th anniversary of the 79th New York Highlander Regiment’s entry into Beaufort. The re-enactors will present demonstrations and discussions of Civil War camp life, drills, marching, the importance of music and bugle calls, the variety and use of weapons, how medical support was deployed in the field, the role of women, camp and cooking, and interactive activities for the entire family. Admission is free. Learn more here.
11 a.m.-4 p.m.: A Christmas Taste of Gullah will feature authentic Gullah cuisine and live holiday entertainment at Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park. This event is free and open to the public . As rice is a direct link between the Gullah culture, Africa and the African diaspora, a rice cook-off will also be held with attendees choosing their favorite dish.
5:30-8:30 p.m.: Light up the Night Holiday Boat Parade. Paddleboarders and kayakers will start everything off about 5:30. At 6 p.m. sailboats and power boats will come up from Port Royal Marina to the Woods Memorial Bridge and will make two passes in front of Waterfront Park.
Sunday, Dec. 5
3 p.m.: Christmas Parade. After skipping a year due to Covid, the Christmas Parade is back! The parade kicks off at the corner of Boundary Adventure streets with the Marine Corps band and our favorite elected officials and dignitaries. Then come all the groups and organizations that are marching, including all of our local schools. Our fire trucks bring up the rear, with the big man, Santa, front and center!
Dec. 10-12
Music from the Manger at Port Royal village. This event benefits the Child Abuse Prevention Association (CAPA) of Beaufort. The weekend events include the new panels and paint children’s art contest, a golf cart parade, a visit from Santa, and a Liz Jane Christmas concert. Learn more here.
Saturday, Dec. 11
1:30 p.m.: Come join the Parris Island Marine Band at Waterfront Park as it performs a holiday-themed concert. Free admission. Don’t forget your chairs and blanket.
Friday, Dec. 17
6 p.m.: Kick off your kids’ Christmas break and come “Chill with a Cop” at Waterfront Park for the family movie “Goonies.” Bring your lawn chairs and blankets. A raffle will be held for kids ages 5-17 before the start of the movie (must be present to win). Hot chocolate, sponsored by Kilwins, hot apple cider, and popcorn will be served free at the event. Vendors will be on site with food for sale.
And don’t forget: Free parking at the Marina parking lot through New Year's Day!

City installs tidal gauge
The City of Beaufort now has its own tidal gauge, one of a network of gauges installed throughout the South Carolina Lowcountry. The sensors are part of a project to provide real-time water level data, tide predictions, and flooding alerts to coastal communities. The gauge, powered by a solar panel, was installed recently at Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park.
