The Village is seeking volunteers to serve on the Code Committee. It is anticipated that the Code Committee will meet twice a month for approximately 2-3 hours each time starting in November. Additional time commitment will involve time for reviewing materials and preparing for meetings.  No specific background is required—just an interest in supporting the quality of life of Greenport residents and a willingness to learn how Village Code works.

Committee members will help review and update the Code to ensure it aligns with community priorities, including:

  • Housing and Land Use – how zoning and development rules shape where and how people live.

  • Quality of Life – issues such as noise, parking, and the balance between residents and visitors.

  • Waterfront and Environment – coastal resiliency, working waterfront, and environmental protection.

  • Village Operations – procedures, enforcement, and clarity of rules across all chapters of the Code.

This opportunity is open to anyone living in Greenport Hamlet. If interested, please send the Village Clerk at

chall@greenportvillage.org an email with a brief statement about yourself and why you would like to volunteer for this committee. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Tricia Hammes (Chairperson of the Code Committee) at

phammes@greenportvillage.org.

MONTHLY VILLAGE BOARD HIGHLIGHTS

PLANNING BOARD

  • The Planning Board held an open forum with members of the downtown business community to discuss issues relating to zoning, planning, and potential development opportunities to help sustain a diverse and vibrant year-round commercial district.

  • The downtown business community is diverse, and there are differing visions among its members, including within the Business Improvement District itself. Nonetheless, there was shared recognition that Greenport’s continued vitality depends on collaboration between the business community, the BID, property owners and Village leadership to balance the needs of residents, visitors, and local enterprises.

  • Discussion topics included year round vitality; economic diversity; vacancy and underutilized property; code, process and incentives; parking, traffic flow and enforcement; housing, workforce and creative economy; community character, safety and cleanliness.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION

  • Greenport has the opportunity to secure a $50,000 grant that would fund professional work to nominate over 500 Village properties for inclusion on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. If awarded in January, the project's documentation would be completed by late 2026. Properties eligible for inclusion in the State and National Registers were identified in a 2020 study. Those properties include Front Street and Green Hill Cemetery and properties southwest of Front Street. Final boundaries will be defined during the next phase.

  • Listing on the National and State Registers offers major benefits, including tax credits of 20% for homeowners and 50% for businesses, access to special grants, and national recognition of the community's historic value. The Village is applying in partnership with the BID, supported by several local organizations. If the full grant isn't awarded, the project's scope will be reduced, but we remain optimistic. This effort is entirely separate and apart from the proposed Greenport local historic district expansion initiative launched earlier this year.

VILLAGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

  • Tuesday Regular Meeting this Month: The next regular meeting of the Village Board of Trustees will be held on Tuesday November 25 at the Firehouse.
  • No Parking on Fourth Ave: In order to ensure safe passage for fire trucks and emergency vehicles, parking will no longer be allowed on the east side of Fourth Avenue between South Street and the Third Street Park.
  • Village Website Update: The Village website is undergoing a redesign, which is scheduled to go live in January of 2026. It will have a new URL ending in .gov (instead of .org).
  • Sewer & Water Rate Increase: Due to a dramatic increase in the cost of water, the Village Board passed a resolution to increase the water and sewer rate fee schedule. Details can be found on the Village Website in the meeting minutes for October 23.

  • Electric Bill Refunds: Village residents will receive a refund on upcoming electric bills through year-end thanks to a contract change that produced a surplus in collected funds.
