In the news: Ashern capital project

Workers have four basic legally protected rights related to workplace health and safety:

  1. The right to know
  2. The right to participate
  3. The right to refuse unsafe work
  4. The right to protection from reprisal

As workers, we are all entitled to exercise our rights under Manitoba’s Workplace Safety and Health Act and Regulations without being penalized by employers.

Protection from reprisal is our fundamental right — and it’s the cornerstone to develop and maintain a positive safety culture. It’s crucial that we feel safe when raising safety and health issues or exercising safety and health rights.

We now have a more formal documented process required for bringing forward safety concerns compared to the previous method of verbally advising a supervisor.

The Notice of Workplace Safety & Health Concern Form creates a formal process that tracks concerns through to resolution enhancing our safety-minded culture.

To report a safety hazard or safety concern, please complete this form and provide a copy to your supervisor. If you prefer to remain anonymous, you can submit the form without your name. The form should be on your WS&H bulletin board and is available on Document Central.

High school student Morgan recently completed an IERHA internship experience at Gimli hospital, where staff welcomed her with open arms.

“This experience allowed me to not only explore careers within the health-care field but also gain experience through patient interactions, observing exams and procedures, learning interesting facts about the human body and how it works, as well as making important relationships and connections for myself," she said.

Lori Buors, Indigenous human resources development assistant, expressed thanks to all the staff who helped facilitate the memorable experience.

“I am so grateful that the clinical team manager and staff members support our internship students and have a positive attitude and are so welcoming,” Lori said.

“Hopefully Morgan will become one of our team members. This is a great opportunity for the students to make sure they have chosen the right career path."
