From the VC:

It’s Time to Check In:

Set the Tone Before PEP

Riverbats,

Performance Excellence Program (PEP) season may still be a few months away, but now is the perfect time to check in. The annual evaluation is intended to capture strengths and opportunities already addressed during the year, and aim to align performance objectives for the coming year. Nothing should come as a surprise during the PEP delivery, so it’s a great time to touch base on goals, mutual needs, and getting clarity on strengths and areas for focus.

Managers: Make the First Move

Supervisors play a powerful role in creating the conditions for growth and clarity. One of the most supportive things you can do right now is check in with the individuals who roll up to you. Ask how they’re doing. Reflect on goals you set earlier in the year. Share what you’ve noticed about their strengths and contributions. If there are things that need attention, discuss them compassionately.

Here are a few questions to guide your check-in:

  • What’s going well, and where do you feel momentum?
  • What’s been challenging, and where do you need more support?
  • Is there anything I can do differently to support your success?
  • What goals still feel meaningful, and which may need adjusting?

Employees: Advocate for Yourself

You don’t have to wait for PEP season to raise your hand. If you’re unclear on how your supervisor views your effectiveness, need their support, or have questions about how to grow in your role - ask! These conversations aren’t just about evaluation; they’re a dialogue on the effectiveness of your partnership as you work to serve students and grow professionally along the way. Your voice and goals matter.

Try asking:

  • How am I doing in the areas that matter most to our team?
  • Are there opportunities to stretch or grow before the end of the year?
  • What feedback would help me keep improving?

No Surprises, Just Support

A thoughtful approach to performance conversations helps us avoid surprises and reinforces our shared commitment to serving our students by living our Values. When people know where they stand professionally and feel supported, they can show up with energy and purpose.

HR Is Here to Help

Your HR team, especially your HR Business Partner, is here to support you every step of the way. We can help:

  • Provide guidance on how to deliver or handle performance conversations
  • Clarify expectations or policy questions
  • Support early interventions when there are concerns
  • Identify professional development opportunities
  • Align team goals with Collegewide priorities

Supervisors: Reach out early if you need support navigating a conversation, documenting performance, or aligning goals for your team.

Employees: Connect with us if you’re unsure how to approach a conversation or want to explore ways to grow in your role.

Clarity is kindness. Giving and receiving fair and timely feedback is critical to our ability to be there for students in the way they need us. And you don’t have to go it alone. HR is your partner in building a workplace where people thrive and students feel the love.

Regards,

Kelly Torrico

YOU ASKED!

How do candidates learn they were not selected for the job?

Does Workday do it? Does HR do it?

Candidate notifications depend on their stage in the process. Hiring managers should decline unqualified candidates in Workday during the Review stage. If a candidate has reached the Interview stage or beyond, the Primary Recruiter (HR) usually declines them and sends a follow-up message. Candidates who were not moved past the Review stage will not get a notification.

Note that selecting “Decline” in Workday does not send a notification; it just moves the candidate to the Inactive Candidate section. A tailored message will then be sent separately. We recommend the hiring manager send a personal message to all interviewed candidates, to accompany the Workday notification.

MEET THE HR TEAM

Brittney Tran

Assistant II, HR

Brittney Tran wears two hats in HR -- one as an Assistant II, the other as President of the department's inaugural Joy Committee. She and her team have organized a volunteer day on the farm at Elgin, a bake sale to raise money for ACC's Emergency Fund, potlucks, pizza picnics, and parties. We asked Brittney some questions to get to know her better.

How do spend your work day?

I handle employment verifications, process unemployment claims, and support onboarding and new employee orientations to ensure a smooth and compliant hiring experience.

What's your favorite Russellism?

"Loving students to success." I am an ACC alumnus and I received a lot of love and support from the Faculty and my Success Coach. (Can I give a shout-out to Carrie King, my former Success Coach? She is part of why I work here!)"

If you could trade jobs for a day, who would you be?

"RB! What better way to bring Joy?"

What's something most people don't know about you?

"I volunteer at Lifeworks, a non-profit that helps prevent youth homelessness by providing housing, career support, and living essentials."

Brittney embodies the dedication, enthusiasm, and joy we value in ACC employees. We're proud to have her on the team!

Take Time for YOU!

ACC's annual Wellness Fest is a chance to get out of the office, meet your colleagues, play games, win prizes, and gather important information for living a healthy lifestyle.

There are two more good reasons to attend this year: the Conscious Cravings Food Truck and chair massages! You may have to return to work when the Wellness Fest ends, but at least you'll be full and relaxed.
