From Planning to Action: Demonstrated Practices of Caring Advances

CLI sponsors guide the first team into implementation

We are thrilled to announce that the Demonstrated Practices of Caring (DPOC) pillar of the Theory of Change (ToC) -- one of the College’s most meaningful culture transformation efforts -- has been officially approved by Cabinet and moved into its implementation phase.

This marks an important moment in our shared journey toward a more caring, connected, and accountable culture at ACC. The design team’s work was gold-standard. And now it’s about translating that design into structured action and courageous leadership.

Meet Our Business Sponsors

We are proud to share that Elma Benavides, HR Managing Director, and Aziz Hussaini, Associate Vice Chancellor for Campus Planning, Construction & Sustainability, have been selected to serve as Business Sponsors for the DPOC Implementation Advisory Team.

Their leadership will carry forward the excellent work of the DPOC Design Team and ensure that our practices of care are embedded across all areas of ACC - from how we lead and listen, to how we design systems, make decisions, and show up for one another.

What Comes Next: From Design to Delivery

The DPOC Implementation Advisory Team, under the sponsorship of Elma and Aziz, will guide this next phase of work. Their charge:

  • Translate recommendations into action - bringing principles of care to life in our day-to-day operations.
  • Ensure alignment with ACC’s student-centered mission and our North Star: improving our student completion rate from 46% to 70% by 2030.
  • Unblock barriers, lead change, and keep the work moving forward with consistency, strategy, and heart.

This team will serve as a model for future advisory teams as other Design Teams prepare to enter their own implementation phases. Each Advisory Team is part of a broader implementation infrastructure that includes:

  • Business Sponsors
  • Change Management Strategists
  • Data Strategists
  • Design Team Representatives
  • Portfolio Management Support

Together, these roles bring the clarity, resources, and accountability needed to transform care from a value into a lived, measurable practice.

Why This Matters: A Philosophical Shift

The move from design to implementation is not just procedural - it is philosophical.

We are learning, as an organization, how to:

  • Use shared language
  • Honor diverse experience
  • Center student success through human systems

And we are reminding ourselves that care is not soft - it’s strategic. It is the foundation that enables high trust, bold action, and equitable outcomes.

With Gratitude - and Forward Momentum

To the DPOC Design Team - thank you. You laid a powerful and thoughtful foundation. To the new Advisory Team - your leadership lights the way. We are excited to walk beside you as this next chapter unfolds.

Want to talk about this or anything else about working at ACC that’s on your mind? Join me and Elma from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. on Fridays for HR Office Hours - all people and topics are welcome!

Let’s keep going. Together.

With appreciation,

Kelly Torrico

Join the Network!

Be in the know! The Theory of Change Network is looking for the next cohort of leadership-minded ACC employees to help ACC reach its North Star.

As a member of the network, you'll hear our Chancellor share his vision for re-centering leadership at the College. And you'll help vet Design Team presentations and nominate Implementation Team members.

Theory of Change Network holds 1.5-hour hybrid meetings each month. Enrollment is on a rolling basis each semester, and the first deadline is September 22 for the Fall Semester. There are three steps to join. Get started here!

Welcome, New Riverbat Faculty!

When school started this week, there were roughly 350 new full-time and adjunct faculty at the front of the classroom. ACC was challenged to fill as many new sessions as possible to accommodate the influx of enrolled students.

Pictured here are about 60 of them practicing their Riverbat pose during a day-long orientation session featuring inspirational remarks from Russell and Dr. Gaye Lynn Scott. After filing I-9s at 8 a.m. and wrapping up paperwork at 4 p.m., they became members of the ACC family.

Where Are They Now?

It's not unusual to hear of ACC graduates finding great jobs in business, healthcare, and technology. But many of them reach even higher heights by sharing their knowledge and passions as community leaders.

On September 11, 2025, ACC will honor seven of the district's most notable leaders for their professional and civic contributions. This year's awardees include:

  • Dustin Bolander
  • Jonathan Barona
  • Michael Lofton
  • Michelle McCarty
  • The Tiarras - Tori, Sophia, and Tiffany Baltierra

All are invited to attend the Alumni Achievement Awards to hear the powerful stories that reflect ACC's far-reaching impact on our communities, shaping Central Texas and beyond.

Gizette Disher

ACC District Police Chief

Today's Supervisor Spotlight introduces us to someone who supervises more than 100 people. Gizette

Disher was selected to become ACC's new district police chief, a role that puts her in charge of about 90 officers and 20 staff members.

Chief Disher brings 29 years of public safety experience to ACC. She comes to ACC from the Austin

Police Department (APD), where she led numerous divisions, including the Special Victims Bureau, patrol, recruiting, training, emergency management, and major crimes. The committee that selected Chief Disher

was impressed with her strong community ties.

We asked her to help us get to know her.

Why ACC? Why now?  I know right now is the right time to join the ACC team. I was prepping for my retirement at the Austin Police Department, and saw all the great things ACC and the new Chancellor is doing and I want to be part of the amazing team.

What is the role of a community college police chief? How does it differ from your work at APD?  I believe the role of a community college police chief is to make the students, faculty, staff, and visitors feel safe. That means having officers be visible and making everyone feel that their respective campus is safe. It's my role to ensure, myself included, that we build relationships with everyone at all of the campuses to let them know that officers are there to assist them if needed. This role differs from APD, because APD is a municipal police department receiving 911 calls on a daily basis from the community. If time permits at APD we try and build impactful and lasting relationships, but sometimes the call load dictates how long we interact with the community.

Add This FREE Learning Tool to Your Kit!

Austin Community College has added Coursera to its toolbox of free learning opportunities. The online course provider is newly available to all current faculty, staff, and students. While LinkedIn Learning -- another online program free to ACC employees -- offers short, skill-based courses focused on professional development and upskilling, Coursera allows users to earn industry-recognized credentials from accredited universities.

To get started, sign up using your ACC email address (@austincc.edu), verify your account via email, and then explore the full Coursera course catalog. Training and support is available through the Teaching & Learning Excellence Division’s (TLED’s) Office of Academic Technology.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Recent studies show suicide remains a growing concern — and a challenging and sensitive topic to discuss. To help normalize these conversations during Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, ACC Employee Assistance Provider AllOne Health sent some materials that provide helpful information and insight from a variety of perspectives:

Take the Trek Through Texas Challenge

ERS is challenging eligible ACC employees to take a 6-week virtual journey through Texas's state parks. The goal is to boost physical activity while exploring our state's natural beauty.

How It Works:

Participants aim for 50,000 steps each week.

Each week you hit your goal, you “unlock” a new Texas State Park. You'll then receive an exclusive video tour of the park and be entered into a weekly drawing for an Annual State Parks Pass.

Participation is for benefits-eligible employees only, and you'll need an account in Buena Vida to register. Sign up now; the Challenge starts September 15. Get all the details here.

More Ways to Get Moving

Save some of that back-to-school enthusiasm for exercise! Fall classes started September 2.

Try Yoga, Strength and Conditioning, Pilates, Zumba, Circuits, or Cardio Dance. Some are in-person; others are virtual. And all can be modified to fit your fitness level. Sign up soon ... classes fill up fast!
