National Retirement Security Month

This stuff is boring. Your future isn’t.

Riverbats,

Retirement plans. Voluntary savings. Benefits. I know, for a lot of us, these are the kinds of words that make our eyes glaze over.

But stay with me, because this matters.

Right now, only 6.25% of active ACC employees are contributing to a Voluntary Savings Program (VSP). Said another way, more than 93% of y’all are not using this additional way to save for retirement.

If that’s you, October is a really good time to take another look.

October is National Retirement Security Month, and on Wednesday, October 21, representatives from our State benefits entities — ERS and TRS — and several voluntary savings providers will be at Highland Campus to help employees understand their options and ask questions. RSVP for the event here.

Your retirement might be decades away. It might be getting closer. Either way, one of the best things you can do for your future self is understand what you’re already receiving through ACC and whether there are additional opportunities to save.

You don’t have to become a retirement expert. You just have to pay attention long enough to make an informed decision.

And that is really what our Total Rewards team is here to help you do.

You don’t have to become a retirement expert. You just have to pay attention long enough to make an informed decision.

Total Rewards encompasses much more than retirement. October is also a great time to take advantage of ACC’s Employee Wellness resources, including free flu shot clinics, virtual and in-person fitness classes, discounted gym memberships, wellness coaching, and stress-management resources. Our Employee Wellness Program recently earned both Gold-Level Worksite Partner Certification and a Moving the Needle Award from the Mayor’s Health & Well-Being Council, recognition to be incredibly proud of.

We will also celebrate colleagues reaching five-year service milestones at our upcoming Service Awards Luncheon. Those anniversaries represent years of knowledge, relationships, care, and service to our students, and I am grateful for every one of them.

Benefits can be easy to ignore because many of them sit quietly in the background of our employment. But they are part of your compensation, your well-being, and your future.

So my ask this month is simple: take a few minutes to know what is available to you. If you’re already saving, great. Take another look and make sure your choices still make sense for where you are today. If you’re not, maybe this is the month to ask some questions.

Your future self may be very glad you did.

In partnership, joyfully,

Kelly Torrico

Vice Chancellor of Human Resources

Professional Development Launches Hiring Manager Training & Supervisor Certificate Program

The HR Professional Development team (PD) hosted their first License to Hire training on Wednesday, September 30.

Reaching 70 of ACC’s highest-volume hiring managers and search committee chairs, the session helped clear up various points of confusion. Hiring managers have more ownership, discretion, and flexibility than they may realize.

License to Hire and the newly published Staff Hiring Governance Framework are two of PD’s efforts at guiding managers through their responsibilities.

Further, Professional Development is relaunching the Supervisor Certificate Program. The application window is open through 5 p.m. on Friday, November 13. A selection committee will review all completed applications using a standardized rubric to select finalists and participants. Full-day monthly skill-building sessions will commence in January 2027, followed by a three-session career advancement prep course next October and November.

PD will host two more virtual information sessions about the SCP this fall:

• October 8 at 9 a.m. — click to join

• October 16 at 11 a.m. — click to join

Please visit the Supervisor Certificate Program site for more information.

ERS Transition in Dental Plan Provider

Effective as of September 1, 2026, the Employee Retirement System of Texas (ERS) transitioned from Delta Dental to Humana as the third-party administrator of dental benefits available through ACC.

Humana encourages all participants to check whether your current dentist is in their provider network. DHMO participants should designate a primary care dentist, even if they had one on file with Delta Dental.

Unless you made a plan change during ACC’s open enrollment, your coverage should have automatically transferred to Humana — without requiring you to re-enroll. The update applies to both the State of Texas Dental Choice Plan preferred provider organization (PPO, available nationwide) and the dental health maintenance organization (DHMO, available only in Texas).

Consult the links here for further information and guidance:

ACC Police Welcome New Victim Services Manager

The ACC Police Department is pleased to welcome Melby Huerta as their new Victim Services Manager.

Melby brings more than 25 years of experience supporting individuals and communities through difficult circumstances. Her work will help students navigate challenging situations while strengthening safety, trust, and connection across ACC.

This role represents an important investment in the support and care available to our students and community. We are excited to welcome Melby to ACC and look forward to the impact she will make in the years ahead.

YOU ASKED

What should managers and employees do with completed Telework Agreements?

In short, the division/manager can retain agreements internally — or the employee can upload the completed Telework Agreement document to their own Workday profile. Here’s how.

Remember, telework is a perk, not a guarantee. Employees working remotely are still expected to meet expectations of their job, their manager, and all ACC policies and procedures. Telework agreements help document these expectations, which can be updated, or ended, as business needs change.

Review ACC’s governance documentation on telework as needed:

• Telework Administrative Rule

• Telework Guideline/Procedure

• Telework: Faculty Work Location and Expectations for On-Campus Presence (guideline/procedure)

Resources

New Ombuds Email Address

To help make the Office of the Ombuds more accessible and consistent, inquiries regarding training, group work, or general questions can now be sent to Ombuds@austincc.edu. The office remains a confidential, independent, and informal safe space for all faculty and staff.

You can learn more about the office and find the link to make appointments here.

Salary Scales and Processes

FY27 salary information is now available on the HR website. Find scales and rates here.

Please note: The full-time faculty salary scale is used for salary placement and approved placement or advancement actions. It is not an automatic annual step-progression system and does not guarantee future salary increases. After placement, salary changes occur only through approved HR, contract, assignment, budget, or compensation processes.

CONTINUAL OFFERINGS

Wellness Program Offerings

Employee Wellness Program exercise classes started on September 1. The schedule — with registration links — is available here.

Flu shot clinics will continue through October 20. Other offerings, including the COVID-19 vaccine, may also be available upon request. Note: eligible insurance is required.

Finally, the 2026 Trek through Texas Challenge has officially begun. Participants who reach the goal of 50,000 steps per week can earn five Buena Vida Bucks each time and enter weekly drawings for state park swag. Registration remains open through November 3, and the challenge itself runs until November 3, 2026.

Say Bravo!

The latest nomination window for Riverbat Employee Bravo Awards is now open. This program recognizes employees whose actions reflect exemplary customer service. Think back on recent partnerships at work. Does anyone you know deserve recognition?
