THE CLUB AT HARBOR POINT
WEEKLY UPDATE

Everybody gets so much information all day long that they lose their common sense.

Hello All -
I am writing from home, which is usually the case on Fridays, as I have been working from home on Friday's since the beginning of the pandemic. This week, though, I had to work all week from home to be with my son who had substantial COVID exposure, and symptoms, but...still testing negative after 5 days of testing! He is fine, and his symptoms have faded, so we're all good...all good. Whew!
But, with that, I got delayed in solving the challenge of the white board queueing system. We are getting closer, though, and should have something new for you all to try out late next week.
Speaking of the pool, the wader heater has been replaced, so kiddie pool is up and running. And, next weekend Family Swim will begin. More information on that in the Pool Info section. Reminder: As a water saving measure, we ask that members will consider bringing their own towels. A towel you bring from home can have several uses before getting washed, but we have to wash towel service towels every time they are used, even if they are only barely touched.
COVID: Yes, it is still here. And coming on strong. Alameda County has reinstated an indoor mask mandate. Marin County has not, BUT they do HIGHLY recommend that people where their masks indoors. Please watch a quick 5 minute video from Marin's Public Health Officer, Matt Willis by CLICKING HERE
You will see below a poll about having a blood drive. There is a national blood supply shortage, and we could possibly help out by holding a blood drive here. Please help us determine if we have the critical mass to do such an event, both with donors and volunteers.
There is lots more to check out below, such as information on a celebration of life event for Jack Mavis, a past HP member, plus a look at a friend who is in the Men's French Open Doubles Final tomorrow, plus the Harbor Point Charitable Foundation's support of AimHigh, a new General Store item and more!

A Potential Blood Drive?
For a variety of reasons, mostly due to the various impacts of COVID-19, there is a national blood shortage. We have been asked by Vitalant about possibly holding a blood drive here at Harbor Point. Before we can arrange such an event we need to know we have critical mass. Consider your eligibility first:
- Must be at least 16 years old
- Weigh at least 110 pounds
- Be in good general health
Also, please note that this would probably need to be held on a weekday, for staffing reasons. Speaking of, there may be a need for some volunteers to helping with checking donors, etc.
Please answer the questions below to help us determine the interest of holding such an event. Thank you!
|
|
1) If Harbor Point hosted a weekday blood drive would you be willing to participate?
|
Yes - I would be happy to donate blood!
|
|
|
I would donate blood, but I am only available on weekends
|
|
|
|
|
|
2) If volunteers are needed to assist with the event, would you be willing to volunteer?
|
Yes - I would be happy to volunteer with the blood drive
|
|
|
I would volunteer, but am only available on weekends.

French Open News - Marcelo Arevalo!
Current Doubles Ranking: 28
Highest Doubles Ranking: 23
El Salvador doubles specialist, Marcelo Arevalo aka "Celo" (like "cello"), played our second Challenger Exhibition back in 2017 when he was ranked about 130 in the world. Since then, he has gone on to win several titles, was a Mixed Doubles Finalist in the 2021 US Open, and has broken into the top 25 in the world in doubles. Marcelo is playing in his first Men's Doubles Grand Slam final tomorrow (7:15AM Pacific) at Roland Garros. GO CELO! (Though if the other team wins that is OK too, as a friend of a friend, Austin Krajicek, is one of Celo's opponents.)

Free Swim/Family Swim Beginning June 11
The summertime weekend Free Swim will begin again in 2 weeks starting Saturday, June 11 and will last through at least Labor Day (or later if the weather remains warm). This means that from 12 noon to 5pm on Saturdays, Sundays and major holidays, a majority of the pool will be opened as a Free Swim Area for member/resident families and individuals to enjoy the pool together. There will be a few lanes that are open for lap swimming, but please be aware that the lap lanes may be more turbulent than usual with the Free Swim activity just on the other side of the lane line. Lane 1-3, and the deep end nearest the Clubhouse deck, will be used for the Free Swim zones. Lanes 1-3 can also be used for walking and/or toddler swim training. Lanes 4-6 will be for lap swimming. Finally, the west deep end (closest to the Fitness Center) is still a "Quiet Zone", meaning that there is no loud talking, splashing, jumping or horseplay while in this part of the pool. Next week I will send out more information on the Free Swim rules, restrictions and details.
Reminder: A Quick Note on Band-Aids in the Pool
There is nothing enjoyable about swimming in the pool and suddenly finding someone else's Band-Aid stuck to your cheek. Or relaxing in the hot tub, feeling something tickle, and finding another person's bandage resting on your shoulder. Not fun.
Please remove any non-waterproof bandages you have on your body before entering the pool, spa or wader. Use only high quality waterproof bandages, to have a chance of them staying on. And do not enter the pool if the wound is substantial, oozing, or anything like that. Use common sense and be respectful of others. Thank you
New Whiteboard Queue System (Still) In the Works
Due to an unexpected work (and parent) from home situation this last week, the new white board system is delayed a bit. Thank you to the many swimmers who sent constructive input regarding a better designed white board system. We will be consolidating that input, and plan to get an updated white board and protocol out to you all as soon as possible.
In the meantime, a couple reminders:
- Please erase your name off the board after your swim, otherwise the board gets too busy and cluttered.
- Don't forget to write down what you expect your end time to be. That is part of the point of the white board, to give people an idea of their wait time, and the end time helps with that.
- The white board is a queuing board, not a reservation board. You should not sign up for later in the day, and show up expecting a lane to be waiting for you. That is not how it works. If a lane is available, take the lane (but still write your info on the board so people know when you will be finishing). If a lane is not available, sign up on the board to queue for the lane and wait until it is available.
- Sharing Mandatory means sharing MANDATORY. Do not put on the board that are not willing to share, if it is a sharing mandatory lane (Lanes 1, 2, 4, 5)

The section below is dedicated to musicians who have passed away over the last week. When I started this almost 2 years ago, it was strictly musicians who died from COVID-19. I have since expanded to musicians from all around the world who have passed from a range of causes, though for many, COVID-19 is still the culprit. Most of these musicians are likely unknown to you, but they have surely touched the hearts and souls of many in their home countries, if not around the world.
I hope you take a listen and enjoy their offerings.
