Action Needed – even if you can not attend the meeting - we request EVERYONE contact the City Council and testify by email - the more messages, the better.

Background:  For over 10 years, the Gig Harbor Sports Complex has been in planning stages. The approved design includes 6 synthetic turf fields and lights for our kids to be constructed in 3 phases of development. Currently, Phase 1 is the only one in motion. For this phase the YMCA has a signed lease agreement with the city to develop Phase 1A (which would include 2 lit turf fields) and they would be the administrative entity. The estimated cost of this phase is $7 million and is expected to start in 2024 with completion by 2025, assuming the YMCA can raise all $7,000,000 from the community.  Phase 1B, fully funded by City tax dollars, and the be constructed in 2024, it will include bocce ball courts, pickleball courts, playground, stage and stage. The city is relying on the YMCA and the community donors to fully fund fields while providing the full over $5 million to construct the non-field features. The city has not committed any to funding Phase 2 (2 fields) and Phase 3 (2 fields).

Talking Points (use what best applies to you)

·      The city’s 2023-2024 Parks Capital Projects includes hundreds and millions of dollars to parks and land but $0 dollars for constructing fields.

·      The City has budgets for $60K for scoping and concept assessment of Phase 2 (Little League Fields) but at the same time allocated money to construct trails over the future Phase 3 (2 fields)
Link to the City’s preliminary budget : https://www.cityofgigharbor.net/DocumentCenter/View/3996

·      Every opportunity for public input the overwhelming support has been for synthetic turf and lighted fields

·      The City of Gig Harbor has constructed only two fields since 1947, City Park at Crescent Creek and Veterans Memorial Park, which they don’t let groups reserve so use by leagues and teams is limited.

·      Our kids and community are at a disadvantage when compared to other communities that have made the investment in all-season fields and similar sports complexes because we can’t provide the same level of learning, competitiveness, and availability.

·      With the expected population growth to the Gig Harbor area and field space is, and has been, at a critical shortage we need to act now, and plan for the future by funding the construction additional fields that are lighted and all weather.

·      There are over 7,000 youth participants in organized fields sports in our community, however there are not enough fields, and the City of Gig Harbor has not done its part.

·      The city done an amazing job preserving our historic waterfront and important habitat –but we need to address our young families and active adults needs too.

·      Remind the council of the expected revenue that would come from the sports complex including field rental income pays for the operation and maintenance.

·      The community has a strong interest in this complex and is willing to advocate, fundraise and unite forces, we now need the City of Gig Harbor to do its fair share.

HSC GM & Technical Director Message:

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thank You!

As the 2022 Rec season winds down, I wanted to take a moment to say a huge Thank You to all the volunteers that make it happen every year. Coaches, assistant coaches, team managers, program directors, schedulers, field maintenance ... and the list goes on and on. The 2022 Recreational season has been a huge success and this would not have been the case without all of you!

I also want to take a moment to not overlook all the parents, grandparents, siblings, caretakers behind the scenes that support our players at all levels. Late nights, early mornings, long car rides, smelly soccer bags, turf nuggets everywhere, the highs or wins and lows of losses are all par for the course. Through it all, you continue to stoke the fire, passion, hopes and dreams of our Harbor Soccer players. Thank you so much for all you do!

As mentioned by Jon above, I hope to see all of you December 8th at our AGM so we can celebrate Harbor Soccer and all we continue to accomplish together!

HSC Director of Player Development Message:

Practice, Practice, Practice....

Why Should You Practice Away From Practice?

“A River cuts through a rock not because of its power, but because its persistence”

The real question is, how good do you want to be?

If you only ever practice with your team, you will never unlock your true potential as a player. If you practice for 15 minutes a day, every day, on your own you will have had more training time than all of your team training sessions put together!

Practicing on your own isn’t easy. You need to be determined, driven and have a purpose.

By using the Techne subscription you have as part of your Harbor Soccer Membership,(Premier Players) you will be able to not only practice new skills and moves, master old ones and get better as a player, but you will be able to challenge your team mates and other players across the country on the Techne Leader Board!

CHALLENGE – Rangers Calendar:
Print out the below November/December skills challenge, put it on your wall and get to work! Have a parent/guardian initial each day you complete. Once the calendar runs out, take a picture of your progress and send it to your coach by Dec 31st. Coaches will forward their best performers to me and I will select one boy and one girl (from random drawing of those submitted) to receive a $25 Amazon gift card! Want to get your name in the drawing? Practice, practice, practice! Ready? Go!

As we move into the winter months the cold temperatures and wet weather may find you in need of home repairs. Or perhaps you have a home project on your plate that goes a bit beyond a DIY.

Last Spring, Harbor was fortunate enough to cross paths with the Moran family and hear more about Shawn's business, Harbor Home Services. The Moran family was instrumental in housing the Rangers FC coaches earlier this year and in return for all they did to make Rangers Camp a huge success, we want to shout out about their local, family and Veteran owned business. Be sure to reach out to Shawn with any Home Projects and SUPPORT LOCAL!
