Hard-To-Count Communities
The New York State Complete Count Commission has released its final report recommending measures to reach hard-to-count (HTC) communities in the 2020 Census . There are a number of challenges identified in the roadmap where libraries can help break down barriers to a complete count including a lack of motivation or fear in providing personal information to the federal government and a lack of digital connectivity for many populations. Recommendations related to how libraries can help to get a complete count include leveraging trusted voices and organizations in the community to talk about the importance of the Census; using youth-facing organizations to emphasize the importance of counting children under 5; forming complete count committees; and establishing "Census Assistance Centers" to increase internet access across the state and help people complete their Census questionnaires. HTC populations in our region include renters, New Americans, young children and families, people with limited internet connectivity and seniors with limited technology experience.

The Census Bureau has established a map where community members that want to work on the Census can post or locate complete count committees. To access the map please visit http://bit.ly/2PZ1b4l

A PDF of the full census report is available at https://on.ny.gov/2Crs6hk

Resource Sharing & Sierra
MHLS cataloging has made the following records available in the catalog based on responses in Action Memo 19-07, where directors were asked about holdings of each eResource and the desire of the library to display them in the catalog. This project has more than doubled the resources available to patrons of the subscribing libraries and also made these new formats and lending models more findable.
  • Kanopy: Loaded mid-October
  • Hoopla: Loaded end of October
  • Quello Loaded end of October
  • Acorn: Loaded end of October
  • Great Courses: Loaded end of October
Remaining titles, owned by less than five member libraries, will be loaded throughout November and December. The MHLS Cataloging team have worked hard to bring these records in efficiently while at the same time creating the individual access links for each library who wished to have their links in place. Any member library questions about cataloging should be directed to [email protected]
Reference & Collection Development
Southeastern NY Library Resources Council members' digital collections are now discoverable through New York Heritage ( https://nyheritage.org/ ). New York Heritage is a collaborative project of the Empire State Library Network, of which Southeastern is a member. Hundreds of cultural organizations have contributed collections to New York Heritage resulting in over a quarter of a million historical resources. Cross search our region's collections with collections from across the state and learn more about the rich history of the Hudson River Valley. Visitors can learn about a countless number of topics and explore a wide variety of original formats. To find resources, you can keyword search across all of the digital resources from the home page. You can also explore via contributing organization or digital collection. Once in the digital collections, there are options for filtering a set of results by subject, format, or location.
