MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO

Greetings, Friends:

February brought the culmination of several months' worth of hard work and preparation from our Scholars, Staff, Volunteers, and members of the YMWIC Community. Our Scholars were truly impressive at the 15th Annual Science Expo, and we delighted in seeing their hard work come to fruition. This event exhibits our core values, and our hope is that it serves as one small link in a larger chain that excites and motivates our Scholars to be contributors to the world as they continue to learn and grow.

YMWIC is also pleased to share with our community that we are growing. Our staff's hard work and dedication have led to the Foundation acquiring funding that will significantly increase our Program offerings.

During International Women's Month, we proudly recognize the women whose dedication and generosity help power our mission and strengthen our community. We rely on our Partners to help us reach these lofty goals. Your contributions of funding, time, expertise, and guidance are integral to the success of our Foundation. To join us in our mission as a Partner, Donor, or Volunteer, please select our information link, volunteer link, or feel free to contact me directly.

In Memoriam

We remember Marie Hegarty, who was a sincere and strong advocate of YMWIC and was pivotal in supporting our mission. Through her time, generosity, and advocacy, Marie played an important role in advancing our work and strengthening our community. Marie leveraged her relationships with the Delaware Valley Chapter of the Project Management Institute to act as YMWIC’s liaison to PMI. As a result, she recruited a large base of community volunteers to support YMWIC’s efforts which remains vital to the success of our mission.

In recognition of her vital role in supporting our mission, YMWIC honored Marie’s unwavering support as our fifth Community Leadership Award recipient. Her legacy of care and commitment will continue to inspire us. We extend our deepest sympathies to her loved ones, and we hold her family in our thoughts.

We honor the life and legacy of Ted Childs, a cherished supporter of our mission. Ted’s legendary career as one of the highest level African American executives at IBM and a nationally recognized professional in his field positioned him as the perfect mentor for the YMWIC Scholars. Ted served as a mentor to our Board member, Brooklyn Green, who went on to become a Chemical Engineer and now serves on the YMWIC Board. Ted established a relationship with North Carolina A&T University and YMWIC that led to two of our Scholars attending the university to study Chemical and Computer Engineering. Ted also honored the YMWIC Foundation as a keynote speaker at a past Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet. Through his generosity, compassion, and belief in our work, Ted helped make a lasting impact on the individuals and families we serve. His commitment to creating a stronger, more connected community will not be forgotten. We are deeply grateful for his support, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones.

Scholars Shine at the YMWIC 15th Annual Science Expo & Scholar Presentations

On Saturday, February 21, 2026, YMWIC held its 15th Annual Science Expo. Scholars from all nine chapters throughout the region came together at B. Reed Henderson High School to present their Science Projects. Having started their projects in September 2025, Scholars have been eagerly awaiting this moment to describe their scientific process and present their data and results to the judges for the chance to win first, second, or third place in their Scholar group.

For their projects, Scholars were tasked to complete background research, conduct an experiment, write a lab report based on their findings, and create a display board and PowerPoint slideshow to present at the Expo. Read more.

Upper Darby Upward Bound Chapter: Annie Forrestal Upper Darby's Scholar is Annie Forrestal, a senior at Upper Darby High School. Having joined YMWIC last year, Annie has quickly made her presence known through strong commitment, helpful and caring intentions, frankness, and sense of humor. In her final semester of high school, Annie is eagerly preparing for college and eventually working in a field that helps others, possibly as a neurologist. Annie’s interests include singing in her school choir, going on nature walks while connecting with God to find inner peace, and watching movies that provide meaningful life lessons. Annie is very outspoken regarding her deep appreciation toward YMWIC Foundation as well as many Scholars who have assisted in her personal development. Annie’s advice to students considering membership to YMWIC, "This is one of the best decisions you will ever make!” We have watched, with great pleasure, your commitment and accomplishments, Annie. Special Interest Groups (SIGs)

SIGs

Scholars enjoyed spending time together in their Special Interest Groups, which meet on Saturdays and cover areas of interest outside of the regular YMWIC curriculum. This month, our Scholars enjoyed Robotics, Chess, Civics and Debate, Choir, and MathCounts. We thank the volunteers in our community who help support the Saturday SIG programming. We could not do it without you! If interested in sharing your time and talents, we encourage you to contact us!

Workshops

Workshop 13

Scholars at the Franklin Edmonds School in Philadelphia enjoyed a hands-on workshop this month. During this workshop, Scholars learned the fundamentals of electric circuits and gained a basic understanding of resistors, resistance, voltage and current. Initial concepts and Ohm's Law were introduced. Scholars worked collaboratively in teams to understand the relationship of Mathematics to the Concepts of Electricity. It was an edutainment, an educational learning exercise that was fun and entertaining for the Scholars.

Featured Family

We are excited to highlight the Whittington Family, proud members of the Norristown Eisenhower Chapter since 2022. They joined YMWIC to give their Scholars greater exposure to STEM, leadership, and opportunities beyond the traditional classroom. Since joining, the family has seen strong growth--especially in leadership--as Noah has taken on a mentoring role with his younger brothers, both academically and in extracurricular activities. The Scholars enjoy hands-on STEM projects and workshops, while the family values the supportive environment, Project Support, and opportunities to encourage Scholars to push past challenges. The Whittingtons are also active volunteers, assisting with workshops, Credo Testing, photography, and special events. They encourage other families to try YMWIC and experience a Program that truly supports growth, leadership, and success!
