January 2021
A MESSAGE FROM OUR SUPERINTENDENT
I'm so proud of the San Antonio District and how well all the administrators, teachers, staff, scholars and their parents adjusted to virtual learning this first semester.
It took each of you to make the first semester a success and you each certainly did your part. Thank you!

We kicked off our open enrollment on November 1 and we continue to accept applications for new Harmony students. We are always excited to share our outstanding curriculum and introduce parents and students to our exceptional staff. If you have a friend, neighbor, relative or former colleague who has a child who may benefit from attending one of our Harmony campuses, please let them know we are welcoming new student applications. Open enrollment will continue through Wednesday, February 10.

We are also in the re-enrollment process through Friday, January 22. Teachers and staff, please help remind your scholar's parents about this important deadline. Additionally, we encourage all our valued parents to secure their child's seat for the 2021-2022 school year by re-enrolling via Skyward prior to the January 22 deadline.

Our District Lottery is scheduled for Wednesday, February 17.

This newsletter will provide a small snapshot of some of our first semester highlights. Great things happened in the first semester, and great things are ahead! My hope is that each of you are as excited as I am to take on the second semester. We are off to a great start!

TEACHERS REWARDED BY TEA FOR EXCEEDING STANDARDS
In September six of our Harmony SA district schools were delighted to learn that several teachers from our San Antonio, Laredo and Brownsville campuses were recipients of the Teacher Education Agency - Teacher Incentive Allotment fund. The fund was passed by the 86th Texas Legislature with a goal to provide an increased salary to teachers who prioritize teaching in high needs and low-income districts. This created a media buzz and Ms. Palma, who has spent nine years teaching at Harmony Public Schools, spoke with Jaie Avila, News 4 San Antonio about her passion for teaching and how honored she was to be recognized for her efforts with the TIA fund. We were honored to kick off the school year with such great news and shared in the success of all our amazing and deserving teachers!
STUDENTS RECOGNIZED FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
HSE-LAREDO SCHOLAR MATCHED WITH FULL RIDE TO RICE
We were proud to learn that the district had three students selected as finalists from 18,000 applicants who applied with the QuestBridge 2020 National College Match. Ulises M., HSE-Laredo, was matched and awarded a full scholarship to attend Rice University in the fall of 2021. He plans to study engineering. His classmate, Gustavo R., HSE-Laredo and Carlos C., HSI-Brownsville were finalists.
QuestBridge is a college and application process that helps academically outstanding low-income high school seniors gain admission and full four-year scholarships to 39 of the nation’s most selective colleges and universities.
STAFF DELIVER CLASS OF 2021 YARD SIGNS TO SENIORS
Students started off the school year learning from home, which was a bit of a let down for seniors entering their final year of high school as they were started the school year away from their closest friends. To help spread a little cheer to the senior class, the administrators, along with staff wanted to make a meaningful home visit to drop off "Class of 2021" signs and a small token of appreciation. For many, this was the first time they had seen the scholars in person since they left campus for spring break in March. Overall it was great to connect and visit (from a safe distance) with senior scholars and their families.
STUDENTS EXPRESS APPRECIATION WITH SPECIAL GIFT
Our thoughtful students are always doing thoughtful things! Whether it is collecting canned goods for the food bank, or toys for children in need, Harmony students are kind! At HSI-SA, students' hands were traced onto beautiful plates, then a design was drawn inside of the hands. All on-campus Student Council members, CRLP students and their friends signed the backs of the plates, and the plates were gifted to our community friends and organizations in appreciation for their partnership and continued support.
CLUBS CONNECT and ADD FUN TO VIRTUAL LEARNING
Under the leadership of very resourceful teachers, our Harmony campuses, have continued to offer extra-curricular activities to students by sponsoring various virtual club opportunities. Harmony have excelled at incorporating clubs into their daily routines. Terrific teachers and staff are happy to share their knowledge and gifts that help scholars stay connected to their peers, while learning something new or engaging in their existing hobbies such as 3D Printing, Math, Art, Poetry, and many more!
The clubs featured in these photos are from Harmony Laredo.
KIDS HONOR VETERANS WITH DRIVE-THROUGH PARADES
Each year Harmony students and staff from throughout our district host and honor their community veterans in their own special way. This year, due to COVID and social distancing measures, campuses like HSA and HSI-Brownsville opted for something a little different. A drive-through recognition parade. Students, along with principals, staff and administrators, created signs and lined the parking lots of both campuses. Together they waved flags and hand-made signs, while they cheered and applauded the veterans for their service to our country.
STAFF and STUDENTS COLLECT ITEMS FOR COMMUNITY
Students and staff from across the district prepared for the holiday season by thinking of others! Together they worked with community organizations to collect food, toys, socks, and blankets to provide to those less fortunate. During the season of giving, Harmony gives to organizations like HOPE Worldwide, Toys for Tots, The South Texas Food Bank, The San Antonio Food Bank, Webb County, Senior Homes and others!
HOLIDAY ART and CARD CONTEST WINNER FROM HSI-LAREDO
Congratulations to Cesar S, 4th grade student at HSI-Laredo! Cesar was the winner of the District's 3rd Annual (Elementary) Holiday Art and Card contest. Second place winner, Hadriana G, 5th grader at HSE-SA and 3rd place winner, Jesus S, 2nd grader at HSI-Laredo, were recognized on the back of the card. All winners received terrific prizes donated by our friends at WalMart. All students who participated did an amazing job and their principals and all administrators are proud of their creativity.
