"Set in a small town in Germany during World War II, the novel is narrated by a sympathetic Death, and tells the story of Liesel, a young foster girl who, in the midst of one of the darkest times in history, learns to read, to survive and to stand up for what is just and humane."

Make the Case
for Literacy!

Make the Case, Open Books' bookcase-decorating contest and fundraiser is coming up! Teams will compete to embellish a bookcase, spectators will vote for their favorites, and everyone will enjoy fabulous food, drinks, and music!

     Relive the magic of Harry Potter and celebrate the publication of J. K. Rowlings' first Muggle novel, The Casual Vacancy, with one last Potter party! The evening will include Harry Potter trivia, games, and refreshments and will feature:

 

- A costume contest with a grand prize of 2 tickets to Broadway in Chicago's Potted Potter!

- Live music featuring wizard rock band Tonks and the Aurors!

- Harry Potter readings and reflections by local authors including Rachel Bertsche, Michael Beckett, and Sheila Johnson

- A visit from the Samich Box Food Truck
