SOLAR ECLIPSE - 1ST DAY OF SCHOOL
A unique celestial event will occur on our first day of school - A SOLAR ECLIPSE! The last time a solar eclipse of this magnitude occurred in Texas was February 26, 1979!
For us in Texas, we will not have a total eclipse. Our eclipse will have a 0.8 magnitude and reach its peak at 1:09 pm.
A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes in front of the Sun fully blocking the Sun. Because our solar eclipse will have a 0.8 magnitude, the Sun will only be partially blocked and will look more like the one in the graphic above. As the eclipse reaches its peak, the temperature will drop and we will experience dusk-like lighting. There have also been reports of animals having strange reactions to the eclipse as it disrupts their normal patterns and rhythm. What an incredible experience it will be for our students!
I know that many of you have several questions about what we will be doing. Below, I will explain all the precautions that we are taking to provide a safe experience for all students.
Questions about the event:
all students be participating in viewing the eclipse?
Yes, all of our students will be participating in the events. Each grade level will learn what a solar eclipse is through some hands on activities and videos. Through this, we will be learning the correct safety precautions that one must take in order to protect their eyes. Then, students will observe this rare event.
all students be using the glasses?
Yes, we have ordered glasses for each student and teacher to wear. Part of our Science standards, is to teach safety. Our glasses meet the requirement for ISO 12312-2:2015.
We will stress the importance of not taking their glasses off, and in Kindergarten and first grade, we are going to have the students hold their hands by the sides of their faces to help ensure that all glasses are on.
What will the supervision look like during this process?
We will have all extra available staff going outside to assist teachers. Your child's safety is our number one priority.
Will parents have the option to "opt out" if they do not feel comfortable with their students participating?
Yes, please email your child's teacher so we can accommodate any students who will not be able to go outside.
*In light of the announcement that we won't have transportation fees, If the information you submitted at Meet The Teacher night isn't accurate, please immediately email your change to firstname.lastname@example.org. Otherwise, we will dismiss your student according to the instructions we have here.
