Library and Maker Space News

Hour of Code
A HUGE thank you to all the parents that signed up to volunteer for Hour of Code this week . Students coded Dash robots to do one of the following:  race to a finish line, say "hello" to stuffed animals, spin around and around using loops, create a path through a course, and many other fun challenges. On the computer, students used the Tynker website to battle dragons, go on a puppy adventure, or complete a quest in outer space. We hope they were inspired to keep coding at home! Go to the library webpage for Hour of Code to read more and to find out how your child can continue working at home through self-paced tutorials online. Here is the direct link to the webpage to learn more.  If you are in need of more activities online, there are multiple free sites that offer similar self-paced lessons for beginning and advanced coders.  HAPPY CODING!
MAKERSPACE is in need of your recyclables!

Starting January 22nd the makerspace will open the upcycling option! We need small items that could be repurposed for new inventions and creations. Please send the following items: plastic caps, boxes, bubble wrap, packaging material (not foam- it falls apart when broken) egg cartons, any container, lids, wire, etc. that could be used for creating. Nothing larger than a 12 x 12 x 12 box, please. Thank you in advance!
Please do not send water bottles (we have plenty on a daily basis) or any item that is not clean.

Flu Season Reminders/Illness:

Currently we are seeing fifth's disease (some kids are not having fever or obvious viral symptoms, however, stomach ache/headache/tiredness/joint pains seem to be predominate initial symptoms), a stomach virus (12-24 hour virus, most do not have fever), some strep throat, and some other un-specified viruses.

Please refer to the following links in regards to Parvovirus B19 and Fifth's Disease.
Fifth Disease
Fifth disease is a mild rash illness caused by parvovirus B19. It is more common in children than adults. A person usually gets sick with fifth disease within four to 14 days after getting infected with parvovirus B19. This disease, also called erythema infectiosum, got its name because it was fifth in a list of historical classifications of common skin rash illnesses in children.
Signs & Symptoms
The symptoms of fifth disease are usually mild and may include
  • fever
  • runny nose
  • headache
  • rash
You can get a rash on your face and body
You may get a red rash on your face called
"slapped cheek" rash . This rash is the most recognized feature of fifth disease. It is more common in children than adults.
Some people may get a second rash a few days later on their chest, back, buttocks, or arms and legs. The rash may be itchy, especially on the soles of the feet. It can vary in intensity and usually goes away in seven to 10 days, but it can come and go for several weeks. As it starts to go away, it may look lacy.

Head Lice

This is the time of year that brings upsetting incidences involving head lice. Head lice can happen to anyone, so it is important to learn how to recognize, treat and prevent it from happening again! Here's what to look for:

-Persistent itching of the head
-Small white particles attached to hair that are difficult to remove
-Small brown bugs that move very fast

*We no longer conduct "line-up" classroom lice checks but if a child is having any sign/symptoms listed above, they are sent to the clinic for assessment. We do not give specific information on particular children or classrooms that have had incidences of lice. However, if there has been a child in your child's classroom with a head lice diagnosis, you will receive a packet stating there has been a diagnosis in the class with more detailed info and education attached. For more information please refer to the link on our website under Hart Elementary/Clinic drop down tab. On the left side there is a link that is always available for your education.

Please remember, if your little ones have had diarrhea, fever greater than 100 (without medications), or vomiting they must be out of school for a full 24 hours so that we can help keep protect others.

If your child is absent from school, written documentation is needed. Please email [email protected] and [email protected] with the date and reason for the absence. Thanks for all you do at home to keep your children healthy and in school.

Lovejoy High School
Performing Arts Presents
Grease

The Lovejoy High School Theatre and Choir students are rarin' to go with one of the world's most iconic productions,  Grease! The show will be presented January 17-19, 2019 at 7:00 PM.

Beginning its life cycle with an eight-year Broadway run,  Grease is an unforgettable trip back to a simpler time of poodle skirts, drive-ins, and T-birds. In the summer of 1959, bad boy Danny Zuko (played by Junior , Bryce Fuller) had a secret romance with the new-in-town, sweet-girl-next-door Sandy Dumbrowski (Senior,  Adelyn Maruca). Now, school is back in session, and the pressure of friends and cliques is making their love a bit more complicated. Click  here for more information regarding the cast.

Tickets are on sale now! Prices are $15 for students, seniors, and staff and $19 for adults. Tickets may be purchased at the online box office:

Come experience the friendships, romances, and adventures that have made  Grease a Broadway knock-out and blockbuster success. We hope to see you "Shakin' at the High School Hop" at the Lovejoy High School Auditorium.

Due to mature high school themes, this show is recommended for middle school students and above.

Music Notes

ATTENTION 3rd GRADE:

Our field trip to the Dallas Symphony is Thursday, January 24. We want our students to have the full concert experience, so please plan on your child wearing nice slacks, a dress or a skirt (please no jeans, gym pants, gym shorts or leggings-unless the leggings are worn under a skirt or dress). Since it will be too cold to stop at Celebration Park this year, we will be stopping at CiCi's pizza in Richardson for lunch. Lunch is $4 for students and $6.50 for our chaperones (ONLY chaperones please. We have a special reservation and space is limited so, unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate parents meeting their child for lunch). Lunch price includes a drink and all you can eat pizza, pasta, salad and dessert. Please bring Cici's lunch money (either check to Hart Elementary or cash) on or before the concert date to the office or to your child's teacher. If your child has an allergy or is unable to eat the lunch provided by Cici's, he or she is welcome to bring their own lunch.

In addition to the Dallas Symphony field trip, 3rd Grade will also be performing our 3rd Annual Folk Dancing Concert. The concert will be held on Thursday, February 7, 2019.

Lovejoy Offers Group Counseling

Lovejoy is offering group counseling for students for a variety of areas. The groups will meet weekly, during school hours, and will be facilitated by Lovejoy's Social Worker, Noelle Gove, LCSW. The overall goal of the counseling groups is to address student's social/emotional needs that may be impacting their experience and success at school. Groups are being offered, based on need, to every campus in the district, grades K-12.

If you are interested in your student participating in a group, please click here to complete the interest form. Noelle Gove will be in contact with parents regarding further details of the group and to obtain consent for student participation. This form is not a consent for counseling, but rather a survey of interest.
