Health Insurance Premium Payment (HIPP) programs

What are the Health Insurance Premium Payment (HIPP) programs?

Virginia has two Medicaid-related premium assistance programs that help pay for all or

part of the costs of employer-sponsored health insurance: These programs are known

as the Health Insurance Premium Program (HIPP) and HIPP for Kids. All applications

are first evaluated for HIPP for Kids. If applicants do not qualify for HIPP for Kids, then

they are evaluated for the HIPP program.

The Health Insurance Premium Payment (HIPP) for Kids program

HIPP for Kids is a premium assistance program. It is for children under age19 enrolled

in Medicaid who qualify for or are enrolled in qualified employer-sponsored coverage.

The Health Insurance Premium Payment (HIPP) program

HIPP is a cost-saving program for Medicaid members. HIPP pays all or part of the

family’s group health insurance premium (monthly cost). HIPP is for members who have

employer-sponsored group health insurance available to them through their own or their

family member’s employment.

Who qualifies for the HIPP programs?

To qualify or apply for the HIPP programs, you or a member of your family must first be

enrolled in a Medicaid program.

All applications for premium assistance are first evaluated for HIPP for Kids. If the family

does not meet the eligibility rules for HIPP for Kids, the application is automatically

evaluated for the HIPP program.

How do you apply?

To apply for a HIPP program, or to renew your coverage, go
