As the latest Covid variants continue to reveal themselves, COVID-19 has proved to be the biggest global public health and economic challenge in history. Although it has posed the same threat across the world, countries have responded very differently and some are faring better than others.
Peter Baldwin, Professor of Comparative History at UCLA, has written books on a variety of topics including 19th-century European public health policies and the global response to AIDS.
In his latest book, “FIGHTING THE FIRST WAVE: How the Coronavirus was tackled differently across the globe” Baldwin shows that how nations responded depended above all on the political tools available – how firmly could the authorities order citizens’ lives and how willingly would they be obeyed?
In Asia, nations quarantined the infected and their contacts. In the Americas and Europe they shut down their economies, hoping to squelch the virus’ spread. In some countries, like England, there were fines for disobeying lockdown limits. Others, above all Sweden, responded with a light touch, putting their faith in social consensus over coercion. Some countries have now changed strategy due to recent surges in the Delta variant in Australia, Canada, India and elsewhere. Register here.

Grendel’s Den Restaurant & Bar, the PathCheck Foundation and the Harvard Square Business Association present Celebrate the Shot - a day of fun activities, live music and exploration of restaurants and stores in Harvard Square. Vaccinations are working and we are grateful to the scientists and healthcare workers who made it happen! Festivities kick off at 5pm with a rousing performance by Grooversity, followed by food, vendors and a special edition of Park Sounds in Winthrop Park. More information coming soon!

Join us to understand how to bounce back stronger.
Speaker: BK Sister Kiran has 41 years of experience as a teacher of meditation. She has a degree in Human Ecology from Cornell University (Ithaca, NY) and a postgraduate background in holistic health. She worked for many years as an administrative assistant in traditional medical settings as well as in the corporate sector and has owned and operated a desktop publishing business. She has also worked as a freelance training methodologist and consultant and is the author of several published articles as well as Your Divine Virtues and Jewel of Light (published by the Brahma Kumaris). She currently administers the Brahma Kumaris Meditation Center in Eugene, Oregon and is a presenter/facilitator of a variety of subjects related to spirituality and personal development.

A biographical film will be shown and friends and relatives will reminisce and share stories and anecdotes about Dorfman’s impact on the world of photography and those closest to her. Help Somkiat get home to Bangkok Thailand
Nancy Jitjaruek, owner of Mix-it, Nine Tastes, and Spicies, has started a GoFundMe for her uncle, Somkiat. Somkiat recently suffered a devastating stroke and requires 24/7 care. His last wish is to finish the rest of his life in his home country, Thailand. Funds raised will go towards a medical stretcher, the flight to Thailand and on-going medical costs. Thank you.

On July 11th, The Harvard Square Business Association, in partnership with the City of Cambridge, Cambridge Arts Council, Councillor E. Denise Simmons and Katie Green, were delighted to host an evening commemorating the life and legacy of legendary storyteller Brother Blue on what would have been his 100th birthday. A plaque dedicated to Blue and his wife, Ruth Edmonds Hill, was unveiled on Brattle Plaza in the heart of Harvard Square. To complement the festivities, the Harvard Square ‘house band’, aptly called The Squares in the Square, performed and guests were treated to a complimentary meal and a blue butterfly-emblazoned birthday cake.

On July 13th, the Office of Cambridge City Councilor E. Denise Simmons, the Cambridge Museum of History and Culture, and the Harvard Square Business Association launched the Cambridge Pride History Stroll, a five-part art installation on Harvard Square business storefronts that invites Cambridge residents and visitors to stroll around the Square and learn about the city’s rich LGBTQ+ History. This installation – which is also produced in partnership with the City’s LGBTQ+ Commission and with the History Project – represents the inaugural event of the forthcoming Cambridge Museum of History and Culture, and it is part of a planned series of events across the city to raise awareness of the museum’s existence and its mission.
