How Eagle Naz VBS Kids

Changed the Future of Kasten

This summer, we had the joy of partnering with Eagle Naz Vacation Bible School (VBS) to raise money for a farming initiative in Kasten, Kenya. Kasten faces significant challenges with food security and water accessibility, and its farmers were in great need of supplies and training.

The VBS kids rallied together, raising a staggering $6,274—surpassing their goal by over $1,000! This generosity has already been transformative for Kasten by funding a two-day training program, attended by 142 community members.

This comprehensive training covered a range of essential topics for farming in an arid region like Kasten such as proper planting methods, land prep, tillage, crop spacing, and weeding. Farmers learned about suitable crop varieties for the region, as well as livestock care. In addition to training, farmers received certified seeds, pesticides, and farming tools to help put their newly acquired knowledge into action.

Because of the impressive attendance, the Kasten Farmers have been honored with a certificate from the Kenyan government, officially acknowledging them as a registered Self-Help Group. This significant achievement marks a pivotal moment in Kasten's path toward economic empowerment. The farmers will now be able to receive sustained support from the government, ensuring a brighter, more secure future for their agricultural endeavors.

Thanks to the generous contributions from Eagle Naz’s VBS, we had the opportunity to extend the program to include an additional day dedicated to health, sanitation, and hygiene education. This training covered topics like proper water filtration and handwashing to help slow the spread of disease among the community. 

Thank you to Eagle Naz VBS for choosing Expansion International and this farming initiative. This project was tremendously successful and represents a significant stride towards sustainability in the community of Kasten.
