Message from the Head of School
“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” The Danish theologian Soren Kierkegaard’s words echo so much of what education is about. We study history, literature and religion to learn from the past in order to help us improve our future. At the high holiday season, Jews are encouraged to reflect on our behavior from the past the year in order to make amends and adjust our behavior for the coming year. Our students receive report cards and participate in conferences to help them learn from their past performance so they may plan their next learning goals. As a school, we also are given opportunities for such growth. Read more

Students in Action
Yavneh's Keshet Krew introduced the middah (attribute) of Hakarat HaTov (recognizing the good) for the month of Adar Alef at the Keshet of Kavod assembly on Monday. Check out the video they created.
Students celebrate a birthday in Kitah Alef.
Kitah Gimel is continuing to learn about the human body. Thank you to Dr. McBeth for leading the students in a lesson about tendons as they dissected chicken feet.
Kitah Gan classes made challah together last Friday. They rotated through centers: grinding wheat, braiding challah, learning the challah blessing, and reading stories about challah.
Kitah Bet is studying rocks and minerals in Science. They took a "Rock Field Trip" to Vasona Park for some hands on learning of plate tectonics, fossils, and rocks.
Kitah Hay has been building boats in STEAM using only reusable materials. To build these boats, they need to think about weight placement, stability and keeping their “passenger” safe. They are testing their boats in the pool this week.
Performing Arts class is rehearsing "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown."
Kitah Dalet is working together on a special project for National Space Week in Israel.
Hebrew Pearls פנינת הלשון
Hebrew Corner by Professor Edna Aphek
In this column, Yavneh’s Hebrew consultant, Edna Aphek, explores the word for Piano in Hebrew. Pianos did not exist in biblical times, and attempts were made to utilize other biblical names for the instrument. The ultimate choice of word that is used to this day, p’santer, seems to have been made by Berta Feinberg, owner of the only piano in Rishon LeZion in 1885. It hails from a reference to an instrument in the book of Daniel. Read more
