Harvest2gether:

Eggs for homebound seniors

In observance of Earth Day this month, we’re proud to highlight a new Precinct 2 and Precinct2Gether program Harvest2Gether. Led by Chris Saddler, Executive Director of Operations, our team is raising chickens for their eggs and growing fresh produce to support our homebound seniors. Commissioner Adrian Garcia believes doing what we can to lower the cost of living for our seniors and help them live healthy lives. Every egg and veggie we harvest helps us care for our community in a sustainable, meaningful way. At Precinct 2, we believe taking care of the planet means taking care of each other. Prioritizing public safety

As a lifelong law enforcement officer, Commissioner Garcia always puts public safety first. This month, Commissioner Garcia supported an additional $7.6 million in funds for the District Attorney’s Office. Harris County has seen a 6% decrease in the jail population because of recent changes in operations at the DA's office. These reforms aim to bring additional progress toward ending the practice of outsourcing inmates to prisons outside of Harris County. The funds will help make the DA’s progress permanent, improve justice system efficiency, and enhance public safety. The funding will also speed up the process of getting justice for victims and defendants and minimize officer wait times while they wait for charges to be filed or not — keeping more officers in the field protecting the safety of residents. Honoring Deputy Darren Almendarez

Commissioner Garcia joined the family of Deputy Darren Almendarez and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office to commemorate the life and legacy of the late deputy. The section of Hwy 59 Eastex Fwy between Little York and the Beltway was renamed as Deputy Sheriff Darren Almendarez Memorial Highway.

Deputy Almendarez had an outstanding 23-year career with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. He served as a Patrolman in District 3, a Field Training Officer, a Certified Instructor, an Investigator for the Multi-Agency Gang Task Force, which included the Federal Bureau of Investigations, and as an Auto Theft Task Force Investigator.

On March 31, 2022, he made the ultimate sacrifice doing the job he loved, protecting the citizens of Harris County and protecting his family. He will never be forgotten.

Revive2Thrive: New sidewalks on Holland Ave.

For parents and students at MacArthur Elementary, Galena Park Elementary, Galena Park Middle School, and Galena Park High School, the new sidewalks along Holland Avenue mean a safer path to school. This project is part of Precinct 2's Partnership Program where we team up with local governments and entities to help fund and executive infrastructure projects. The sidewalks are between Clinton Drive and 18th Street.

In the last month, Commissioner Garcia led to:

  • Invest $7.6 million in new funding for the District Attorney’s Office to improve public safety.

  • Approve funding to turn part of South Houston Avenue into a safer, greener street with a linear park, bike lanes, and sidewalks.

  • Approve Harris County’s first Climate Justice Plan. Commissioner Garcia was proud to see how the input of Precinct 2 residents help shape it. The plan supports his Revive2Thrive work by focusing on flood protection, better transit, and greener, safer neighborhoods.
