October's Artist of the Month

October's Artist of the Month is Beckie Hermans.

You may have seen them in kit form when you were a kid: latch hook rugs made of small lengths of yarn knotted to a canvas mesh backing. Inspired by the nostalgia of the medium and her background in graphic design, Beckie Hermans’ latch hook tapestries depict a colorful world of geometric forms and abstracted landscapes. Each tapestry contains tens of thousands of individually knotted pieces of yarn, and can take months of daily work to complete. Her work is as much an exploration of color, form, and concept as it is a deliberate meditative practice.

Beckie Hermans is a graphic designer and artist whose work pairs the colorful geometric supergraphics of the 1970s with the philosophical exploration of the spiritualist art movement. When she’s not working on her next latch hook tapestry, you can find her hunting for yarn (and books) while thrifting with her husband, or excitedly pointing out birds (usually while she’s supposed to be driving).

We are always looking for new artists who want to display their work in the Library! Please email programs@pvlibrary.org for more information.

There's still time to donate!

For the Great Give Back this year, Dutchess County Libraries are doing a donated food & personal hygiene item challenge against Ulster County Libraries! Patrons may bring in unexpired non-perishables and personal care items starting September 1st. Whichever county has the most donated items by Great Give Back Day October 17th wins!

Please place all items for donation in the designated box inside the library.
After counting, items will be either placed into the Community Pantry within the Library or donated to the Pleasant Valley Food Pantry on Martin Road.

We are excited to announce that we are a drop-off location for the annual Dutchess Outreach Coat Drive again this year!

There will be a donation box in our lobby where you can leave your clean, good condition warm winter coats. All sizes accepted, but there is an increased need for boys, mens, and adult plus sizes.

Coats can be donated October 1st through October 31st.

These coats will be given away to those in need during the month of November at locations throughout Dutchess County. Please visit the Dutchess Outreach website for more details.

Hear about the haunting at the West Point Military Academy, "The Screaming Woman" at Fort Mifflin, and the haunting at Trinity Church in Manhattan, and listen to a chilling recording of the ghost of a slave girl captured by Barry at the John Jay Homestead.
