Wellness Now: Your Oasis in a Hectic Day
"Break your routine, wake up your mind."  ~ Anonymous

We are such creatures of habit. And that makes it easy to get stuck in a rut. Routines can be useful; they are grounding, make us feel comfortable and provide necessary structure.  But too much “same old, same old” can be mind numbing.

Sometimes you just gotta shake it up.

May you be well,

Bust Out of That Routine

Ever notice how much we're on auto-pilot? For instance, do you:

  • Always put your socks and shoes on the same foot first?
  • Sit in the same place at the kitchen table or in a class you regularly attend?
  • Step forward with the same leg when you start walking?

There's a good chance you may not even be aware. Pay attention next time. If the answer is yes, try something different. If you always put a sock on your right foot first, start with your left foot instead. Sit in a different place at the table and enjoy a new view! Start with your other leg when you walk. These simple changes may feel surprisingly odd or awkward but it give it a go.

Small changes can make a big difference in how we feel, perceive and act. It makes us focus and keeps us in the present moment. Moreover, it builds new synapses and pathways in the brain. That improves our capacity for learning, unleashes creativity and increases powers of concentration...at any age!

Here are some simple "rut busters" that will also give your brain a boost!

  • Try using your non-dominant hand when writing, brushing your teeth, eating, stirring your coffee. Grow new neural connections and improve creativity.
  • Clasp your hands. Now unclasp them and do it the other way. (If your right thumb is crossed over the left thumb, do the opposite; re-interlace your fingers.)
  • Sit cross-legged; now, uncross your legs and cross them the other way.
  • Pick a place you where you regularly drive or walk to and try a new route. Notice what's around you.
