The Recycling Directory: What Can It Do?
You may have seen us talking about the Recycling Directory on our Facebook page, or perhaps you've seen it mentioned before in our monthly e-newsletters. But do you know the full extent of what the Recycling Directory can do for you?
At rrrasoc.org, you can use this convenient web tool to do more than just search how to dispose of an item. On top of being able to type the name of any material or item, you can also view popular searches and install the RRRASOC Recycling Directory to your mobile device and connect your Amazon Alexa device for a hands-free experience.
Test your recycling know-how right from the Recycling Directory by playing Ready, Set, Sort! - the interactive waste sorting game. Sort the materials correctly to build your own digital park. Try it and become an expert!
You can also play the game here.

Find Local
Drop-Off Sites
Get directions (with an interactive map!), hours, and contact information about our Southfield and Novi Recycling Drop-Off Sites. There's even a list of which types of materials are and are not recyclable at the drop-off sites.
Need to know if your curbside pickup is going to be affected by an upcoming holiday? Want to know when the next HHW Collection Event is happening? Look no further than the Recycling Directory's built-in calendar function! You can even set yourself up for reminders via email or the RRRASOC Recycling Directory app.
Access resources for Simple Recycling, an at-home clothing collection service that is free for all RRRASOC community residents! As clothing and textiles are not accepted in your curbside bin or at the drop-off sites, this is an easy, convenient way to donate your clothes and other usable household items from home.
The Help tab provides community contacts for information about curbside services including set up and reporting problems. For other inquiries you can complete the contact form and our Education Coordinator will respond as quickly as possible.

Saving Energy in the Winter Months
As the weather remains frigid, we think it's safe to say that everyone is heating their homes to stay cozy this winter. But did you know that heating your home too often can increase your household's environmental impact? Many of the resources we use to power, heat, and cool our homes are non-renewable (but if you're using renewable resources like wind or solar, we applaud you!), so it's important to stay mindful of your home's energy consumption over time.
Below are a few steps you can take to conserve energy, stay warm, and save money in these colder months:
- Let the sun in during the day and close the curtains at night. The sun will help to naturally heat your home throughout the day, but your windows can become a source of heat loss after it has set. Closing your curtains or blinds when the sun goes down will help to prevent cold chills from cooling your home.
- Eliminate cold air drafts by checking your doors, attic, and windows for air leaks. Install a draft guard under your door if needed, and caulk any broken seals that would result in air leaks.
- It's much more cost effective to warm your body than your house, so why not keep the thermostat lower and wear a warm sweater and socks instead? Invest in a thick comforter for your bed to stay toasty overnight, too!

HHW Collection Event Tip - Latex Paint
Unlike oil-based paints or those containing lead, cadmium or mercury, latex (water-based) paint is not hazardous and is therefore not accepted at the 2022 HHW Collection Events. To determine if your paint is latex, find the Cleanup Instructions on the label: if it instructs you to clean your brushes with soap and water, it's latex. However, if it instructs you to clean your brushes in a solvent or warns of combustibility, it is not latex and should be disposed of properly at an HHW Collection Event.
How Do I Dispose of My Latex Paint?
-
Small Quantities: Air dry. Remove the lid and allow the liquid to evaporate. This may take several days, but it works well if what you have left is only an inch or two from the bottom of the can.
-
Medium Quantities: Use a drying agent such as cat litter, sawdust, "Oil-dri", or waste paint hardeners found at home improvement centers as absorbent material. Mix an equal amount into the can and allow the paint to dry.
-
Larger Quantities: Pour thin layers (1in) of paint into a cardboard box lined with plastic. Allow the paint to dry one layer at a time until all paint is hardened. Once the paint is thoroughly dry, place it in a regular trash bag and put it out for trash collection.
Protect our communities! Please refrain from dumping liquid paint on the ground, in the trash, or down any drains as it can contaminate groundwater and damage sewage systems, septic tanks and the protective liners of landfills.
