A PLACE OF EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION

Thankful Hearts

Rotary Student of the Month

Each month the La Habra Rotary recognizes students from each of the three high schools. It is one of the best meetings of the month. This month they recognized the top male and female athletes from each of the schools. It is my pleasure to introduce everyone to Sofia Wirtzer as the Sonora High School female Student of the Month for the La Habra Rotary.  Sofia plays outside hitter and libero on our varsity volleyball team.  A volleyball team who has made it to the second round of CIF for the second consecutive year.  She has been playing for a total of six years and five years with Club Volleyball.  She played a little basketball but fell in love with the sport of volleyball.  She loves the sport so much that she coaches 7 to 13-year-old beginners and coaches at some of the camps during the summer months.  I asked her if she would be interested in teaching one day because of this and sadly she said, probably not, but her mom, who is also her hero, is a teacher.  Sophia says that her mom finds joy in every aspect of her life.  This makes her a hero and someone that anyone could look up to in life.

Sophia has a weighted grade point average of 4.1 and is interested in studying psychology at Standford or some of the Ivy League Colleges that she has applied to.  She talked about studying people like Tom Brady because his chromosomal levels were so high that he could not adjust to retirement.  We could relate to Micheal Jordan with the Bulls and Michael Jordan with the Washington Bullets.  When talking about basketball we walked into her largest inspiration who is Kobe Bryant.  She talked about having a Mamba mentality; a sense of determination, in every aspect of life.  Sophia does say that it is important to disengage at least one day of the week.  Life is all about balance.

This balance can be exemplified by looking at the other activities that Sophia is involved in.  She is a part of Journalism, Nami, GSA, Green Earth, Book Club, and NHS.  Her activism in clubs is balanced by her love for music.  She has different styles to match her moods, but one constant is Harry Styles.  Not only has she gone to six of his concerts, but she has listened to his song, Fine Line, every day since it came out.  Sophia and I can agree that it is fun to go to these concerts and meet new people.  Ladies and gentlemen, it is my pleasure to introduce to you, Mrs. Sophia Wirtzer.

Rotary Student of the Month

Each month the La Habra Rotary recognizes students from each of the three high schools. It is one of the best meetings of the month. This month they recognized the top male and female athletes from each of the schools. It is my pleasure to introduce to everyone Diego Rosiles-Camelo as our male athlete of the month representing Sonora High School and our football team.  He played outside linebacker for our football team and made it to the first round of CIF playoffs for the first time since 2015.  While some people would consider Diego a quiet person, he has a lot going on.  Diego has a weighted grade point average of 4.3.  His favorite academic class was AP US History.  When we talked about a motto to live by, he said that he really does not have a motto, he has a picture that exemplifies who he is.  The picture of the iceberg with a little showing above the water, but a lot underneath is an image that Diego can relate to because people see his success, but they do not know how hard it was to get there.  When you first meet Diego he can be timid at first but he has so much work going on under the water.

Diego is an active member of Key Club, MeCHA, and has been an active participant in the Holiday Food Drive.  He stated that he is looking forward to the opportunity to participate in the food drive for his final year of high school.

If Diego is not studying or playing sports, you can see him at the movies with his friends.  He has already seen Wakanda Forever, but his favorite movie is Avengers Infinity War.  Diego does not only watch the movies, but he analyzes the graphics and the imagination of the creators.  This is probably why Diego is enrolled in the Game Design Program at Sonora.  Hopefully, one day Diego would like to combine his creativity with his passion for graphics to design logos for game companies or have his name in the credits of a famously animated movie.

Ladies and gentlemen, I have full faith that Diego will accomplish all of his dreams and more because of his heroes.  His parents have overcome many obstacles in life and this has made him grateful and desires to work hard.  It is my pleasure to introduce to you, Mr. Diego Rosiles-Camelo.

Friendsgiving

Friendsgiving is a blend of friend and Thanksgiving, and it refers to a large meal eaten with friends either on or near Thanksgiving. People are serious about their Friendsgiving celebrations. There were a couple of groups who held their celebrations this week, Waterpolo and Cheer. We are so grateful that we have students who care for each other so much that they will celebrate with each other at these important times of the year. :#beholdblueandgold
