After three decades of handing contested custody and child access cases, I can accurately report that when it comes to parents with small children, who disagree over holidays, Halloween is usually the most fought over holiday. Personally, when I was in that camp, I felt the same. You don’t need anyone to tell you why; it is just fun!
When uncongenial separated or divorced parents take their children “Trick or Treating” together, they should be mindful of the four C’s and nothing else. The Halloween four C’s are children, costumes, cars, and candy. This means that there is to be no discussion about anything other than about the children having fun, their costumes, other costumes, staying out of the way of cars, and of course, candy! While discontented parents may get an “A” for effort in trying to Trick or Treating as a “family” sometimes it is too challenging and not worth the effort. Do not ruin it for your children, stick to the four C’s or alternate years. ~Mike
