DID YOU KNOW that a study from Alzheimer's & Dementia found that higher vitamin B12 status in mid-to-late life was associated with slower declines in memory, executive function, and language compared to lower status in patients without baseline dementia? Additionally, the associations for executive function and language persisted regardless of folate status.

In patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy and low serum vitamin B-12 levels, 16 weeks of daily supplementation with at least 1000 mcg of vitamin B-12 improved neuropathic symptoms, according to a study from The Journal of Nutrition.

Warning: Counterfeit, Adulterated Supplements Online

On the internet, especially at Amazon, there is an epidemic of counterfeit, adulterated, and purposely mislabeled dietary supplements. Recent analyses of methyl vitamin B12 supplements sold on Amazon found only 56% met label claim. Only 14 of 35 oregano oil brands met label claim. A study from JAMA Network Open found that half of immune products analyzed from Amazon had labels that did not match the contents. Amazingly, a man was arrested for selling counterfeit Pure Encapsulations products. Know your supplier!

Depression

According to a study of over one million participants from Frontiers in Nutrition, there is a significant association between elevated sugar intake and depression risk, with the results being robust.

Children

Limiting added sugars during the first 1,000 days after conception, so during pregnancy and a baby’s first two years, greatly reduces the risk of a child developing diabetes and hypertension in adulthood, researchers reported in Science.

Diabetes
Consumption of sugary drinks is linked to 9.8% of new cases of type 2 diabetes annually, contributing to approximately 2.2 million cases worldwide. These beverages are also linked to 1.2 million new cardiovascular disease (CVD) cases each year, or 3.1% of the global total, according to a study from Nature Medicine.

Mortality

According to a study from The Journal of Nutrition, higher intake of added sugar, especially from beverages, is associated with a significantly increased risk of all-cause mortality and CVDs.
