Dallas County lowers COVID risk level from orange to yellow

The county’s public health committee recommends that people at risk for severe illness from the virus still mask in public indoor settings

Dallas County has lowered its COVID-19 risk level to yellow as cases and hospitalizations continue to decline. Under the yellow, or “proceed carefully” designation, the county’s Public Health Committee recommends that people at high risk from the virus should wear masks in public indoor settings, especially in areas with high numbers of people.

SpaSho And AMPTV To Launch Black Skin Care and Health Series, ‘Très Beau’ Starting Sept. 21
By SpaSho Media

Is beauty only skin deep?
Maybe not, according to these stats from the McKinsey Quarterly; Black Americans spent $6.6 billion on beauty last year which is 11.1 percent of the total US beauty market. The report also noted that most Blacks had a frustrating experience with products and services not geared toward them; however, the inequity in Black-owned based businesses with products specifically for Black skin is a real problem when it comes to getting these products into the mainstream beauty market.
Proposition A receives stamp of approval
Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson, joined by former U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, State Sen. Royce West, State Rep. Victoria Neave Criado and former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert at a press conference yesterday, urged citizens to vote Yes for Proposition A, supporting a $1.5 billion measure to revitalize Fair Park and Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas.
The ballot measure ask citizens to vote for a 2% increase in the hotel occupancy tax which is paid by visitors who stay overnight in Dallas hotels and motels, and citizens would reap the benefits of modernizing these venues but would pay no increase in property or sales taxes.

BIG DAY PRESENTATION

Foundations to award $200,000 in grants

The Cotton Bowl Foundation and College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation are honoring teachers, in conjunction with the BIG DAY, via a $50,000 grant to the University of North Texas at Dallas Call Me Mister program, a $50,000 grant to Urban Teachers and a $100,000 grant to Educate Texas. These grants are geared to support and celebrate these organizations, specifically as they strive to combat the nationwide teacher shortage.

According to the Texas Education Agency, 43,000 teachers in the state of Texas left the profession during the 2021-22 year. These shortages have a direct impact on educational opportunities for students and disproportionately impact students of color. Each organization is dedicated to retaining good teachers as well as increasing the pool of new educators, especially those representing diverse backgrounds.

Each organization has chosen a teacher or a future teacher to be honored with a surprise presentation as part of the BIG DAY. These individuals will be surprised with a $1,000 gift card and tickets to the 87th Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic. Several additional teachers from both programs will receive gifts from the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, College Football Playoff and CFP Foundation.

An open letter to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis
on CRT and ‘wokeness’

For a Black woman who grew up in the Jim Crow South, indoctrination and revisionist history have a different meaning.

By Norma Adams-Wade

Dear Gov. Ron DeSantis:
Earlier this year, you signed Florida’s HB 7 Individual Freedom Bill, said to be the nation’s first of its kind and commonly called the “Stop WOKE Act.”
Media coverage has kept the public informed about raucous support and challenges to the bill, including a federal judge saying the bill may violate First Amendment rights to free speech.

Cowboys quarterback’s injury may not be as bad as previously thought
By Dwain Price
Texas Metro News

On second thought, maybe Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott won’t be sidelined for an extended period of time after all. Prescott had surgery Monday on his injured right thumb and was told by doctors that he will be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks. But on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday, owner Jerry Jones said not so fast. By Jones’ calculation, the Cowboys won’t put Prescott on the injured reserve list. He added that his star quarterback could invariably return to the lineup as soon as the Oct. 9 game against the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.

How 17 acres of wetlands could be transformed to protect Dallas from
severe flooding

Public-private partnership touts plans for greenspace that would be used for flood prevention, education

At the top of the South Side on Lamar building, 17 acres of wetlands can be seen just south of downtown Dallas. The area will soon become the Dallas Water Commons, a public greenspace with the main goal of flood prevention and filtration. The multi-million dollar idea was born in 2013 out of the city-sponsored “Connected City Design Challenge,” and is now in the design and permitting phase.

New academic studies aim to reduce inequalities for Haitian Americans
The Haitian Times
By Ashley Miznazi

MIAMI — With Haitians in the U.S. often categorized solely as Black, several academic researchers based in Florida are undertaking studies they hope will surface more data specifically about Haitian Americans. The researchers are looking at how factors such as immigration, economic status and language make the Haitian experience unique in hopes of reducing inequalities.

WHO wants name change for ‘Monkeypox’ virus, calling it ‘discriminatory
and stigmatizing’
NNPA Newswire/BlackPressUSA
By Louisiana Weekly

(TriceEdneyWire.com/Global Information Network) — The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced plans to find a new name for the viral disease informally known as ‘monkeypox’ which, says the world body, is “discriminatory and stigmatizing.” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in a briefing on the matter, said the virus is no longer behaving as it did in the past and therefore should be renamed.
The Path

As we walk through life's journey, we leave footprints. Some just show where we are going. Others redirect us when we get lost. Still others remain to guide those we leave behind. I see your footprints.
