Dear #Positivity Friends,

Most people think November is the food king of the American calendar. Sure, Thanksgiving turns a lot of heads. But did you know that the month of October features National Pumpkin Spice Day (October 1), National Taco Day (October 4), and National Shawarma Day (October 15)? Oh, there’s also National Pasta Day (October 17) and National Chicken and Waffles Day (October 20). And let’s not forget National Chocolate Day (October 28) and National Caramel Apple Day (October 31), which together give that other holiday that falls at the end of this month a run for its money on the sugar-rush-o-meter!

How about you pick one of these special days and have your own little celebration around the family dinner table? Put out a mighty taco spread. Teach yourself how to make a pumpkin spice latte. Make a big bowl of pasta using a shape you’ve never cooked before. Or serve a blow-out smorgasbord that celebrates all these delightful days at once.

You don’t need an excuse to sit down together with your family for a good-time meal. But sometimes you have to do your part to celebrate what makes this country great. National Fluffernutter Day (October 8) anyone?

As always, I hope that you are enjoying my newsletter. If you missed an issue, you can find them all on my website. Pass this newsletter along and encourage your family and friends to sign up!

Lemonade for Lahaina

The news of the Lahaina fires on Maui in August saddened people all over the world, including 5-year-old Edison Juel of Seattle, Washington. Having recently vacationed in Hawaii, Edison’s ears perked up when he heard what was happening there. Edison told his mom, Ami Juel, that he wanted to do something to help so he set up his Lemonade for Lahaina stand and the community responded. By selling lemonade and snacks, along with matching donations from his parents’ workplaces, Edison raised $17,000 his first week in business. A little guy’s big heart is helping to heal a devastated village 2,650 miles away—one cup of lemonade at a time.

I’m No Dodo!

Once thought to be extinct, the takahē of New Zealand are back again to delight the world. These rotund, green-blue, flightless birds were declared extinct in 1898. Rediscovered in 1948, conservationists have been working ever since to increase their numbers in the wild. Controlling the population of predators introduced by European settlers—stoats, ferrets, rats, and feral cats—has been top priority. So has raising chicks in captivity using sock puppets shaped like adult takahē heads to simulate Mom and Dad. These fascinating birds are now being released into New Zealand tribal lands of the Ngāi Tahu on Lake Wakatipu. Tā Tipene O’Regan, a Ngāi Tahu elder, says of the takahē, “There are few things more beautiful than to watch these large birds galloping back into tussock lands where they haven’t walked for over a century.”

One Potato, Two Potato

What do potatoes and cling wrap have in common? A lot more than you might guess, thanks to Great Wrap, a company based in Melbourne, Australia. While working in the construction industry, architect Julia Kay was shocked to see the outrageous amount of single-use plastics used to wrap pallets. So she set out to create a more sustainable product. Her dream of compostable cling wrap came to fruition when she teamed up with her husband Jordy Kay and some like-minded chemical engineers to find a way to use potato waste to create cling wrap. Extracting a compostable polymer from the potato starch, they developed Great Wrap, which only takes at most 180 days to decompose. The raw materials for this product are relatively inexpensive, which makes this home-compostable wrap competitively priced compared to plastic wrap. On their website greatwrap.co, the Kays say they are committed to “reimagining today’s materials to solve tomorrow’s problems.”

Life Between the Tides

by Adam Nicolson

Life comes in all shapes and sizes and finds a way to survive in all kinds of places, as Adam Nicolson proves when he introduces the reader to the inhabitants of a rock pool, just the kind you hardly notice when you walk past them at the beach. This book opens your eyes to the small world of wonder that lives, breeds and dies in that simple but complex pool as water ebbs and flows above it for years on end. With the help of scientists and writers, as well as his own research, Nicolson poetically and playfully describes the life you’ll see if you just take a closer look. You’ll never look at a puddle by the sea the same way again.
