On April 25 from noon to 1pm, the Silver City Museum will host a panel discussion on sustainable ranching with practitioners here in Grant County. Local ranchers and conservationists will discuss ranching and stewardship practices that sustain the land and the ranching livelihood that depends on it. The event is part of the Museum's Brown Bag series, were guests are invited to bring a bag lunch to the Museum Annex at 302 West Broadway. Admission is free; a suggested donation of $5 helps support the museum's education programs, collections care and exhibitions.
This program, "Sustainable Ranching," complements the museum's year-long exhibit Ranching in Grant County. It is one in a series devoted to exploring the rich history of ranching livelihoods and lifestyles in the region.
Presenters will include: Ron Troy, Southern New Mexico Project Manager for the New Mexico Land Conservancy (NMLC); Jimmy McCauley of LT Ranch; and A.T. Cole of Pitchfork Ranch.
Ron Troy holds a B.S. in Finance from the University of Idaho, a B.S. in Fish and Wildlife Science from New Mexico State University, and an M.S. in Biology with an emphasis on Ecological Restoration from Idaho State University. He is based in Silver City helping NMLC preserve New Mexico's land heritage by helping people conserve the places they love. The organization works closely with ranchers to conserve, restore, and protect land from development, preserving it for both nature and agriculture.
Jimmy McCauley operates LT Ranch near the Grant County airport. His family has been ranching in the county since 1904. He holds a degree in Animal Science from New Mexico State University and worked at the Chino mine for 10 years.
Originally from Arizona, A.T. Cole and his wife Lucinda bought the Pitchfork Ranch in 2003 and retired to the property. They follow restorative management practices. The main projects on Pitchfork Ranch are habitat repair, maintaining its historic character and archeology, collecting soil and water data research and education, and keeping a small herd of grass fed and grass finished cattle.
The Silver City Museum creates opportunities for residents and visitors to explore, understand, and celebrate the rich and diverse cultural heritage of southwestern New Mexico by collecting, preserving, researching, and interpreting the region's unique history. Security, how safe are you on the web? Honestly, not very safe. Any time you publish, send an email, tweet, or what have you on, into, or through the web, you are partially identifying yourself. There are people (criminals) who have the skills and equipment to turn that small bit of identification into access; access that allows them to pretend they are you and even intercept "secure" data transmissions intended specifically for you.
What can you do? What about your children who live on their data plans? Some services have added 2-level or two-form authentication, this often includes a simple code number or code word being sent to your phone in addition to your password; but a criminal who has your password can set him/herself as the recipient of that phone call so what good is that? Strong passwords are a hassle to remember and to enter; but, are currently your only real protection. Right up until you let your phone memorize your passwords and then you are as vulnerable as someone who has no password.
But wait! We remember the big fluff when Apple wouldn't help the NSA or the FBI crack an iPhone; Apple worked hard to turn that into advertising for them and the media didn't whisper a word when a private hacker needed all of 30 seconds to crack that phone and make all of its contents available (Apple didn't say a word about that either) and now Apple is running ads based on that supposed security that iPhones enjoy. Let me assure you the iPhones are no more secure than Android phones.
So, is there any good news? The carriers, the services, and the servers (which tend to be the weak link in many of the public and mass hacks) continue to improve their security, the devices continue to incorporate vastly improved security measures at both the software and hardware level. The amount of information we, as users, have access to regarding risky behavior, risk management, and prevention improves daily and we can attempt to be as secure as we find necessary. This can mean security scans for our phones, our tablets, and any devices that we use, dark web security scans that look for our information on known "bad guy" sites AND finding ways to take the profit out of hacking.
Have questions regarding your security or how exposed you or your business is, Benediktson Computer would like to assist you; please call us at (575) 956-9723 or email to help@benediktson.com

Funky, folksy The Bus Tapes to Perform at Mimbres Region Arts Council's Folk Series at The Buckhorn Opera House Saturday, April 20, 2019 The Mimbres Region Arts Council, in conjunction with premier sponsor Cissy McAndrew/United County Mimbres Realty, lodging sponsor Holiday Inn Express, and Gila Mimbres Community Radio, announces the fourth and final concert for the 2018-19 Indie Folk Series. The Bus Tapes take the stage Saturday, April 20 at 7:30 pm at the Buckhorn Opera House, in the scenic mountain town of Pinos Altos- just a 10-minute drive from Silver City. Hailing from Santa Fe, N.M., The Bus Tapes are a "fresh and funky" band comprised of husband and wife duo Heather Tanner on vocals and guitar, Case Tanner on bass. Playing together for over a decade, they combine original songs and covers of fan favorites to create eclectic folk rock sets with a blues and jazz-inspired twist. The Bus Tapes have won two New Mexico Music Awards-the first in 2012 for "Best Novelty/ Humorous Song" and the second in 2013 for "Best Pop Song." A rhythmic, acoustic feel on top of relatable song writing is the leading tone behind their collaborative music.
