February Zone 10 Update
The show season is off to a busy start! We hope all of our Zone 10 members are taking advantage of the great opportunities USHJA offers for young, amateur, and professional riders. Whether it’s participating in one of the hunter or jumper team championships, competing in one of the USHJA’s special classes, or applying for various riding grants and scholarships, don’t forget that there are many ways USHJA is there to help. Registration is now open for the USHJA Horsemanship Quiz Challenge, which is a great way for young riders to learn about horsemanship and earn scholarships as a result. In January, the HITS Coachella Desert Circuit hosted the first USHJA Gold Star Clinic – West, another great opportunity for young riders. HITS Coachella also hosted the final west coast World Cup qualifier of the season. Be sure to check out the current World Cup standings in this issue to see who’s in the hunt to represent USA at the World Cup Finals in Paris in April!

Best of luck to all of our riders in the show ring!

Emily Williams and Beach Boy earned multiple accolades for the 2017 show season
To hear the awards Beach Boy racked up in 2017, you would easily think he’s an experienced hunter. With owner Emily Williams (Stephanie Haney and Melissa Jones, trainers) in the irons, he was the The Huntover Farm Perpetual Trophy Small Champion 15 & Under (West) at the USEF Junior Hunter Championship, the LAHJA ‘A’ Junior Hunters 3’6” Champion, and the USEF Horse of the Year in the Junior Hunter-Small 3’6”, 15 & Under division. Surprisingly, Emily revealed that 2017 was his first year exclusively doing hunters.

“We started out the year thinking that he was going to be my 1.20M horse for the year, but after numerous people told me that he would be a great hunter, we decided to give it a try,” Emily shared. “At just eight-years-old, I was amazed at how he stepped up and surpassed my expectations at every turn. He kept surprising everyone!” When asked what makes Beach Boy so special, Emily responded, “To me, his story, personality, and desire to win are what make him special. Everything he has been able to accomplish this year has been absolutely amazing.”

Emily and Beach Boy plan to compete in more international hunter derbies this year and continue his success in the hunter ring.
