Good things are happening here at Children's Law Center because of you! We want to thank you for your generous donations and support to the Children's Law Center.  While CLC is ever-changing, our mission and goals remain constant and our commitment to children continues to drive us. Your support benefits our organization with funds that allow us to reach unprecedented success and progress. We couldn't do it without you!

Examples of ways in which we are achieving our bold goals:

1. All children are entitled to obtain a free and appropriate public education.

2. All children and youth should be afforded a safe permanent home using a continuum of services and the least restrictive alternative appropriate to meet their needs.

3. Youth in the juvenile justice system should receive fair and equitable treatment with due process rights afforded to them at every stage, access to quality representation, and individualized strength-based services.

We appreciate your choosing to be a part of this exciting journey through donating support. Your gift provides the opportunity for youth to overcome obstacles and realize their visions. Again, we thank you!
A Letter From The Executive Director

In case we have not yet met in person, let me introduce myself. I am Acena Beck, Executive Director of Children's Law Center, and I look forward to partnering with you to remove barriers to success for the children and youth we serve. You are a partner in this endeavor because of your interest in the wellbeing of children and youth in our communities, because of your belief that children should be well educated and safe from harm, and because you invest in children's futures by supporting Children's Law Center (CLC).

As you may know, Kim Brooks Tandy, founder of CLC, stepped down as Executive Director on July 1st of this year to focus on specific issues for CLC. Through a rigorous selection process over the past year, the CLC Board of Directors selected me to be CLC's second Executive Director in the organization's 28 year history. It is an honor and a bit of a challenge to fill the shoes of such an esteemed colleague as Kim, but with the support of the Board, our excellent staff and you, our supporters, CLC continues to achieve its goals.

In the coming year CLC continues to focus on individual legal representation for more than 500 children and youth in Kentucky and Ohio.  CLC continues to seek to improve the systems that serve children and youth through policy reform and impact litigation and CLC continues to provide training and education for legal professionals about the rights of children and youth.

In addition to continuing these efforts, CLC will increase its focus on advocating for children who are victims of crime, youth who are in transition out of foster care or incarceration and children suffering from the effects of poverty. Also, CLC will create and conduct Pro Se self-help materials and clinics to teach parents and guardians how they may self-represent in child custody proceedings and education advocacy processes.

As you can see, our workload is increasing as the need for our services increases.  This means CLC needs increased resources so we can meet the needs of our communities' children and youth. Please join us in the good fight through your donation.  Simply click on the "DONATE NOW" or send us your check for your contribution. Children are relying on us all to help them overcome barriers to success.

Sincerely,

Acena Beck

Client Spotlight

Only two weeks after school began and right after his 18th birthday, Najee Williams found himself on the street. Upon conferring with the Children's Law Center's Youth Transition Advocate, Najee was placed in a stable and supportive home with his former basketball coach, who agreed to host Najee until he graduated. CLC provided multiple supports for Najee and his "host family" through the school year--helping the family to navigate and provide Najee's basic needs, aiding Najee in applying for jobs, and encouraging Najee to maintain his grades. He worked with CLC tireless to apply to college, secure appropriate future housing, and secure employment before his high school graduation date in May. Najee is now enrolled in college at Northern Kentucky University for the fall semester on a full scholarship. He is spending his summer working two jobs in hopes of buying a car before the start of the semester.

Najee says "The Children's Law Center is awesome! They have worked with me and the host family, and never let me doubt myself. Thanks for believing in me!"

Special Thanks to The Kentucky Bar Foundation!
CLC is thrilled to announce that we have been granted generous funding from the Kentucky Bar Foundation to initiate a Pro Se Custody Project in Campbell County and Jessamine County. Participants will be provided with all legal documents required for a child custody action filing. Pro  Bono  attorneys will provide an overview of the child custody process, answer questions, and offer procedural advice. Law students will assist participants with completing and filing the legal documents. We are very excited about this new project. Thank you to the KBF for making it possible!
