PWRDF Wild Ride supports refugees and IDPs

Dear PWRDF supporter,

PWRDF supporters are coming out in full force to support this year's Wild Ride, benefitting PWRDF's partners who work with refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs).

In June, Levon Sevunts, the Communications Officer for UNHCR Canada, joined our Wild Ride launch webinar and shared with us some sobering statistics:
  • By the end of 2021, 89.3 million people worldwide had been forced to flee their homes and communities due to persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations and political unrest. This is more than double the number at the end of 2012.
  • In February, 2022, the war in Ukraine pushed us well above the 100 million mark for the first time in recorded history. It is one of the largest forced displacement crises since the Second World War, and certainly the fastest.
  • When people are forced to leave their homes, they want to stay near to their country of origin. In 2021 nearly three-quarters of the world’s refugees were hosted in neighbouring countries. And most of those countries were low- and middle-income countries. High-income countries account for most of the global wealth, yet hosted only 16 per cent of refugees.
Spotlight: PWRDF is supporting refugees and host communties in South Sudan
In Yei County, South Sudan, refugees are returning home. PWRDF and the Canadian Foodgrains Bank are supporting a Humanitarian, Early Recovery, and Development (HERD) program to provide emergency food relief and agricultural support. Watch and share this video.
Here’s how some of our supporters are putting their stamp on it:
Do you have a passion for cycling? Baking? Hiking? Reading? No matter what your favourite activity, you’re invited to join the Wild Ride and put your stamp on it with your creative participation.
Parish Representative Jasmine Sandham of St. Paul's Anglican Church in Thunder Bay, Ont,. organized a jigsaw puzzle-a-thon and raised $1,090.
PWRDF's Representative
for the Diocese of the
Yukon, Betty Davidson,
is crocheting 10 baby blankets and hopes to top last year's total of $2,835.
And Primate Linda Nicholls is reprising her popular Hymn Sing on Facebook Live, September 22 and 24 at 7 p.m. ET.
