HAVEN E-NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2, 2019

9/5:    Curriculum Night, 7pm

9/6:   Uniform Order Deadline

9/25: 8th Grade ETHS Info Night, 7pm, Auditorium

9/30: Non-Attendance Day, Rosh Hoshanah

10/2: Early Dismissal, 11:30am

10/9: Non-Attendance Day, Yom Kippur

We want to thank the parents who attended the Parent Coffee on Friday morning; Principal Roberson, Assistant Principals Lewis and Wharton, and lunchroom supervisor Ms. Coffey for taking the time to provide information and updates; and to all for the discussions that followed. For those not in attendance, one of the discussions was on children and screen use. In collaboration with Assistant Principal Wharton, we are hosting a screening of Screenagers this month (date TBD). In the interim, we encourage parents to visit www.screenagersmovie.com for helpful information and to sign up for their Tech Tuesday Tuesdays weekly newsletter.

Now that the school year has begun, we want to share with you that we have put Haven Help Us (HHU) on hiatus this year. While it has long been a tradition at Haven, we believe it is an opportune time to evaluate whether this is the best program to showcase the talents and creativity of our student community or if there is another program that might better engage and inspire our students. To this end, Principal Roberson will meet with 8th grade focus groups to discuss HHU over the next few months. We also plan to have HHU as the focus of our February 2020 community engagement date so that parents and guardians may share their feedback and ideas. In the interim, if you have questions on this (or any other PTA related matter), please let us know at havenptsa@gmail.com.

Lastly, if you have parenting information (healthy families, academic support websites, etc.) you think appropriate to share with other Haven parents/guardians, please feel free to post those on our Facebook page. (If you haven't yet joined, the link to do so can be found in the Facebook blurb below.) If you are involved with a community organization relevant to middle school children/families and would like to pass along information on your organization and/or its events, please click HERE for the D65 digital backpack request form and guidelines. ( Once approved by the district, information can be passed along to me at havenenews@gmail.com for inclusion in Enews.)

District 65 offers Boy's and Girl's (6th, 7th and 8th grade): Basketball, Volleyball, and Soccer. I do not have exact dates and times for games and schedules. Once the district sends the game schedules to me, the coaches can put together practice schedules. Also, all sports have "cuts," depending on the number of kids trying-out, we do not keep every kid trying out. Each sport has a 6th grade team, a JV or Varsity. Depending on our numbers trying-out will determine how the district wants to disperse the teams. All this information will be sent to you, once I get more information from the district. (Commitment days are typically Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays)

The online store to purchase PE uniforms will close on Friday, 9/6. Please be sure to have your child's uniform ordered before then. We will continue to accept heart rate monitor strap orders past 9/6.

Uniform orders placed after July 27 are scheduled to arrive by 9/13. In the meantime, please have your child bring a t-shirt and shorts from home to change into for PE. We will begin fitness testing this week.

If your child's uniform doesn't fit, please don't write their name on it yet. Send it back to school and we will exchange for the correct size in PE.

If everything fits, please write your child's name on EVERYTHING! Locks, uniforms, deodorant, etc. That way if it goes missing we know who to return it to. You can also purchase labels at  https://mabelslabels.com/en_US/fundraising/support/

To order a PE uniform or heart rate monitor strap please visit  https://havenpe.weebly.com/uniform-orders.html

We are looking forward to another successful year with Evanston School Children's Clothing Association (ESCCA)!
Since 1931 ESCCA has been serving the community through its simple mission: "No District 65 child should miss a day of school for need of warm clothing." Each year, we serve roughly 700 children in grades K-8 who attend District 65 schools.

To volunteer for ESCCA, please click  HERE    to sign up for a date to assist families as they choose clothing for their children. The first date is coming up quickly - September 24! For other ways to volunteer (sorting clothes, washing, mending, etc.), please go to  www.escca.org .

To donate clothing to ESCCA, please see this LIST of acceptable donations. Donations can be brought to the ESCCA drop box on the west side of the JEH Building or to the ESCCA bin in Haven's main office.

Thank you so much for your help! Let us know if you have any questions.
