Haverford Business Developments
November 2018
HPED Annual Meeting
Our Annual Meeting, held on October 2nd at the CREC, brought together over 50 business and civic leaders, elected officials, and Township residents.

In addition to a giving a report on HPED's projects for 2018 and plans for 2019, we presented our annual awards of excellence.
Jeff Siegler, Partner and Principal Planner of Downtown ReDevelopment Services, gave a report on his two-day visit to Haverford Township.

Mr. Siegler was impressed with the vibrancy of our community, the level of civic engagement, and noted the recent changes to the look of the Township. He recommends that the Township focus on the planning process by updating the Comprehensive Plan and/or creating and implementing Corridor Plans.

Other suggestions included identifying the center of the town, working on branding to unify the many business districts, raising standards for the appearance of businesses using codes and ordinances, and making the Township more pedestrian and bike-friendly.
2018 Annual Awards of Excellence
Charlie and Dara Gans
Charlie and Dara Gans of Charles B. Gans Plumbing, Heating & A/C were awarded the Donald Kelly Award for Civic Engagement. This award is presented to a person or organization whose notable efforts and good works have impacted the quality of life and economic development of Haverford Township in meaningful and significant ways. The recipients of this award will exhibit Don’s qualities of intelligence, vision, passion, persistence, and hard work.
Gans Plumbing has been a business of exceptional service for nearly 100 years, spanning several generations. Between them, Charlie and Dara have shown significant leadership and service in the PA Plumbing, Heating & Cooling Contractors Association, the Rotary Club, HPED, the Haverford YMCA, the Oakmont Farmer's Market, and the BLAST.
Haverford Township
Bill Weschler, President of the Board of Commissioners, accepted HPED's Eye-Catching Award for the new Municipal and Police Building. This award recognizes a Haverford Township business or organization for an exceptional recent facade renovation, window display, or property improvement that brightens up the Township.

The new building was completed at the end of 2017, and includes a light-filled lobby, outdoor patio spaces, and a spacious room for public meetings. Thank you to Haverford Township for this terrific addition to our community!
Brick & Brew
The recipient of our 2018 Standing Ovation Award is Brick and Brew. The Standing Ovation Award is presented to a business of the highest standards, offering exceptional customer service, an attractive, welcoming environment, and engagement in the community life of Haverford Township. The Winner is selected by popular vote.
With lines out the door on many nights, Brick & Brew has become a favorite of Township residents. Known for their wide variety of beers on tap, an amazing selection of whiskey, and exceptional food, they have created a following in the region.

Beyond being a great addition to the restaurant offerings in the Township, they created what we at HPED call “The Brick & Brew Effect,” signaling to other restaurants and stores that investing in Haverford Township makes great business sense. We thank them for the notable impact on the economic growth of the Township over the past five years.

Welcome to Positivity Yogis!
HPED welcomes Positivity Yogis to 31 S. Eagle Road in Havertown, which opened in June 2017. "I am very pleased with the support I have gotten from the community. We have developed about 250 active customers since we opened," revealed owner Gina Pawlik.

Gina grew up in Haverford Township and has a degree in Marketing from West Chester University. While she worked in finance and marketing, she used yoga regularly as a stress reliever. Several years ago she decided to make a career change. She was trained as a yoga instructor, and eventually started her own yoga and life coaching service.

Gina was thrilled to open Positivity Yogis in her hometown. "I really appreciate the genuine, kind and loyal people that live in Haverford Township, and I love having the opportunity to enrich my customers lives," explains Gina. "I focus my business on creating a community in the studio where positive energy is felt. I appreciate each person for who they are, and encourage them to be their best selves. When I see how yoga changes my customers - their bodies, their energy, their attitude towards life, it is very satisfying!"

The studio has several instructors and holds classes in Hot Yoga, Hot Tabata (interval workout), Chair Yoga, Red Hot Dance, Balance & Stretch, Barre & Pound, and more. They also offer special monthly events such as Family Yoga, Sound Healing & Meditation, and social events. Beginners are welcome!

Positivity Yogis is located at the L&M Shopping Center behind Starbucks. New student pricing includes $5 for your first class or 5 classes for $29. To see their schedule of classes and upcoming events, check out their website at http://www.positivityyogis.com/home.html.
New Artist Showcased in HPED Art in Windows Project
Rudy Miller is a published illustrator, paper doll artist, product designer, and award winning painter. She is also one of the founding members of the Haverford Guild of Craftsmen. The paintings in the window of The Kelly Center are seascapes that Miller thinks of as soothing "Blue Space."

Reflecting on her experience with this project Rudy said: "I had a great time installing the artwork both for the Haverford Guild and myself in the windows at The Kelly Center. As an artist I am happy to help with the beautification of our business district while at the same time having the opportunity to display my work to the public. It's a win-win."

More of Miller's work is currently on display at the Regency Cafe in Lansdowne. For more information go to ermillerdesigns.com.
HPED's new program initiative to enhance the attractiveness of storefronts in the community’s business districts – Art in Windows continues to grow .  This new service connects owners of underutilized storefront windows with local artists to fill display spaces with attractive works of art.

For our second installation, Havertown artist, Eileen (Rudy) Miller, set up two art displays in the street windows of the Kelly Center for Music Arts and Community at 4-6 East Eagle Road in Havertown.

The window on the right showcases oil paintings by Rudy. The exhibit on the left side of the Center is called "Growth Patterns." It is a mosaic created by 12 different artists from the Haverford Guild of Craftsmen, representing their growth as artists and craftsmen, as well as the growth of the Haverford Guild.

The Haverford Guild of Craftsmen was chartered in August 2009 as the 16th local chapter of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. Its membership has climbed to over 100 fine crafts people spanning many disciplines including basketry, jewelry, ceramics, clothing, handbags, fiber, painting, art dolls, glass, woodworking, and photography. More information about the Guild and its artists can be found at
haverfordguild.org.

The Kelly Center for Music, Arts, and Community will be a year round community based performance space that will offer area residents, from youth to seniors, the chance to showcase their talents in music and the arts. It is especially aimed at providing area students and youth a place to play and showcase their own music in a safe space after school when the only other option may just be hanging out. The Kelly Center, scheduled to open early in 2019, will also offer the chance for art shows and installations, as well as bringing the best professional performances to perform in the evening.

The Center’s Director, Tom Kelly, is pleased to support this art collaboration. “Our community is brimming with artistic talent. Musicians, photographers, painters, and crafters all need somewhere to display their work, and the Kelly Center will give this community that venue .

The Art in Windows initiative is coordinated by HPED’s Window & Facades Committee. Storeowners who are interested in hosting art displays can contact Don Kelly at donaldkelly@aol.com. Artists wishing to get on the registry should contact Rudy Miller at ermillerdesigns@gmail.com
