Hawaii December 2019 Newsletter
I n November, we had some fun events at the Honolulu Zoo and in Chinatown on a tour called WWII: Red Light District tour (for adults only). Our next community event will be on January 11, 2020 at the K1 Go-cart track in Kapolei. Who will win the trophy this year?

Please note that this is the last month that a local Hawaii newsletter will be written by me and sent out. In January, MFSUS is changing to a monthly newsletter developed by the national MFS team, with a local section that I will write focusing on local events and information. This will be sent to you as usual via email and posted on Facebook as well.

The importance of giving to others can’t be understated and that’s because the secret to  living is giving.  If you really think about it, what is life all about? It’s not about what you do for yourself: It’s about how you’re able to better the lives of the people around you – your loved ones, the people in your community or the lives of people somewhere else in the world.
Meaning never comes from what you get, it comes from what you give.

Please take a minute to read a thoughtful article by a community member in Colorado Springs on how giving back has made her OUTCAN posting so fulfilling.  To read her article, please   click here .
Give Back Month - Local Activities to give back to our communities

During the month of December there are plenty of opportunities to give back to our communities, such as through beach clean ups with 808 Clean-ups - check out December's calendar by clicking here .

For example, on December 14 there is a clean up at Schofield Barracks and every second Sunday there is the Makai Pier clean up (beach and underwater) just outside Waimanalo.

Or, help out at a homeless shelter perhaps serving Christmas dinner or donate food, money or your time to the Hawaiian Food Bank . New this year, the Hawaii Foodbank is proudly partnering with Goodwill Hawaii to host a special, community event called “Pack da House” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, December 14. The FoodBank is inviting the community to join us at the Hawaii Foodbank warehouse in Mapunapuna by bringing in food donations and/or household goods. This will help them “pack” their warehouses for those in need and who may be experiencing a little emptiness this season.

MFS Programs and Services
At MFSUS We get it...

Your MFS team listens and acts on what we hear!
We are military families too, and we get it.
We heard of many people having difficulties with the Medical System, so we have helped facilitate regular online briefings from the CDLS(W) Medical Staff.

We heard families had difficulty understanding what they needed to know for their OUTCAN posting, so we made a  Family Guide.

We heard our website wasn't meeting your needs, so we made  cafconnection.ca/unitedstates .

We heard you wanted more connection, so we developed our  Facebook Page Twitter Feed , and numerous  Online Meetings, Events, and Recordings .

We heard about your emotional and mental health struggles, so we held a  Social Worker-Led Program  and created a  Mental Health Campaign , filled with important resources.
That's just to name a few of the initiatives MFS has been working on to address your challenges and needs. So use your voice to help impact the lives of current and future CAF families posted to a U.S. OUTCAN. Give us your feedback. We listen!

Thank you to our families for speaking out!
Missed a program you are interested in? These are all recorded so you can view them at a later date. Click below for recent programs or go to the CAFConnection.ca site for a listing of all programs.

Online Mental Health Resources

Family Information Line is offering online support via video.
How is it different?

Just like calling or emailing, the Virtual Counselor will provide information, referrals and  emotional support  to military families. While access to the FIL is available 24/7 via phone and email, virtual counselling is scheduled between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. ET. This allows families to book several sessions at specific times and to request the same counselor for these sessions. Virtual counselling can be accessed by phone or video.

How do I book an FIL session via video?
Connect with the Family Information Line by phone at 1-800-866-4546 or by email at  FIL@CAFConnection.ca  and request to speak with a Virtual Counselor. The Virtual Counselor will book a session or multiple sessions for you.
