Growth Momentum for Visitor Arrivals
We continue to track daily statewide visitor arrival data from the Hawaii Tourism Authority. Erik Kloninger’s analysis noted a spike in visitor arrivals around Presidents’ Day and Valentines Day, with daily arrivals exceeding 35% of the pre-pandemic level for the first time. The overall trend since the mid-October start of the Safe Travels Hawaii (“STH”) program has been generally positive, with arrivals spiking during holiday periods. While year-end holidays were above 33% of prior-year levels for a full week, daily arrivals in January dropped to between 17% and 22% of prior year arrivals. The post-Presidents Day/Valentines Day drop-off in daily arrivals was not as pronounced as the post-New Years drop-off, suggesting that Hawaii’s tourism recovery is gaining momentum. Some of the increase in daily visitor arrivals likely includes travel by recently vaccinated Americans but also could be reflective of lower infection rates across the mainland and increasing optimism. The chart below demonstrates the growth in arrivals.
Air Seats are being Added
Erik Kloninger also compiled rolling three-month forward air seat data published by HTA. For example, the March 2021 data represents scheduled seats in March, April, and May. The number of scheduled air seats jumped climbing in November, following the implementation of STH, and has stayed fairly constant until this month. It looks like the airlines are gearing up for a stronger summer season. The chart below shows the number of air seats scheduled for the following three months since February of 2020.
Other Good Visitor Industry News
Governor Ige approved Kauai’s plan for re-entry into the STH program with April 6th set as the start date and he approved continued funding for the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
Some political leaders are calling for unfettered interisland travel by April 1 and the use of a vaccine passport program by early summer.

The Outlook
There is cause for some optimism with the recent growth in visitor industry metrics. We hope that the State's political leaders will display courage and quickly effectuate a vaccine passport program to encourage the return of visitors to Hawaii.
