This issue's header photo was taken at the loʻi of Hoʻokuaʻāina, where the congregations of St. Matthew's and Emmanuel wrapped up their observance of the Season of Creation with a workday weeding the taro patches. They got their fill of mud baths for a while! More photos and story are in the Creation Care Corner further below. (Photo:Stason Skeen)

THE SEASON OF CREATION ENDS WITH A WORK DAY - To bring the “Season of Creation” to an end, St. Matthew’s and Emmanuel volunteered at the loʻi of Hoʻokuaʻāina in Kapalai, Kailua, in the Moku of Ko‘olaupoko. Along with our new friends from Christ Church Uniting, we weeded a couple loʻi patches to allow the kalo to grow freely. One of the beautiful take aways was the moʻolelo (story) behind the kalo. The story is about a Kalo older brother and a Kanaka (human) younger brother who took care of one another in a reciprocal relationship so that both could flourish. This idea of creation being in a familial relationship is also found in St. Francis of Assisi’s “Canticle of the Creatures.” In this hymn attributed to St. Francis, he explains that all of creation comes from one Father or Parent, which means we and creation are family as well, just like the Kalo and the Kanaka, we too can build a relationship with creation where both siblings can flourish.
