Third Sunday of Advent

Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

RIP The Rev. Frances Kay Johnson

The Reverend Frances Kay Johnson, died on Saturday, November 26th, after a short illness. Kay served as a Canon of the Cathedral of St. Andrew from November 1997 to March 2001. After leaving the Islands, she completed her doctorate and was a practicing Analytic Psychotherapist. She continued to be canonically resident here in Hawai’i. She is survived by her husband, Robert and her daughters Kelly and Jacquelyn.

Please remember Kay in your prayers and in the Prayers of the People of our congregations.

ALMIGHTY AND ETERNAL GOD, to whom there is never any prayer made without hope of mercy, be merciful to the soul of your faithful servant, Kay, being departed from this world in the confession of your Holy Name that she and all the departed may be welcomed into the company of your saints, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rest eternal grant her, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon her. May our sister, Kay, rest in peace. Amen.

Ordination to the Priesthood of Frank Condello II

Frank Condello II will be ordained to the priesthood this Saturday, December 10, 2022, at 10:00 AM, in the Cathedral of St. Andrew, Honolulu. Clergy are invited to vest (cassock/surplice or cassock alb) with red stoles. Your prayers and presence are requested.

Attention All High School Youth!

Applications Now Being Accepted for The Episcopal Youth Event 2023 (EYE23) Hawai'i Delegation

All high school students currently in grades 9-12 are encouraged to be a part of the Hawai'i delegation to attend the triennial Episcopal Youth Event being held at the University of Maryland, July 4-8, 2023. The Hawai'i delegation also plans to stay a few more days to perform community service in the areas nearby Washington, DC. Exact dates for the mission portion to be advised soon.

EYE is the Episcopal Church's second largest event (surpassed only by General Convention), that brings together well over 1,000 youth to worship, fellowship, learn, and create bonds with their peers from around the globe. Guest speakers, workshops, energized worship, and prayerful moments, are offered to help explore and deepen their faith, no matter where they are in their journey. There are also links to pictures, videos, and reflections by the youth from previous EYEs.

The application deadline is Monday, January 9, 2023. Authorizations required are parent or guardian, and priest, warden or youth leader. The final delegation will be announced towards the end of January. If you have any questions, email Sybil Nishioka.

Thank you for electing me to serve as a Delegate for this past 80th General Convention. The experience was overwhelming and awe-inspiring. I learned that your “V-Binder” (or virtual binder) is your new best friend as you intently follow and vote on proposed resolutions that will affect The Episcopal Church.

My experience differs greatly from those who went before me. Covid protocols shortened the convention, there was no youth presence, and the ECW (Episcopal Church Women) were not there. We were encouraged to stay together with our own delegation only and have minimal contact with delegates from other states. Luckily, our Hawai'i delegation got along very well and we wanted to spend as much time together as possible! READ MORE

COVER YOUR GROUND PRESENTATION - The Diocese of San Joaquin in California has posted videos of recent presentations by their Creation Care Commission. Here is a report of one presentation watched by Lot Lau on "Cover Your Ground": The Presenter first gave her opinion that we need a New Way from Monoculture, which is the food and agriculture industry’s custom of massing one crop on acreage. She brings the audience back to the Old New Way, the use of land for household gardening and to help it capture and hold carbon better while it lays fallow. The principle of their presentation is “Bare Earth Does Not Sequester Carbon” so they present an idea to apply to our homes and our church yards. I found that the process may be more appealing and useful in a place like central valley California, but perhaps too complex for owners of the smaller plots of land common in Hawai'i. It involves not only broadcasting compost households create, but also preparing the soil in our yards by digging, mixing compost with cardboard, mixing grass clippings, covering that with dirt, and watering occasionally. They call it “lasagna gardening.” On the other hand, maybe that makes it more appealing because it may be applied to small areas.

'Tis the Season in Kaimuki!

The Kaimuki Christmas Parade has been a tradition in our community since 1946. This year Epiphany was joined by our sister church Good Samaritan. Also our very own Boy Scout Troop 82 joined us. Reminder: Christ Memorial Accepting Applications for Vicar

Christ Memorial Episcopal Church in Kilauea is now receiving names for a full-time Vicar, through December 31, 2022. They are currently building a vicarage on campus that should be completed by summer 2023. For more information and to view the church profile, visit the Diocesan website HERE.

Coming Up: Holy Innocents Capital Campaign Kick-off with Pau Hana Friday Event

Holy Innocents in Lahaina kicks off a massive capital campaign effort with a special Pau Hana Friday event on December 16, from 4:00-5:30 PM. The public is invited to enjoy a guided historical tour, pupus and entertainment, featuring music by Wilmont Kahaiali'i and hula by Kalei Jaramillo.

Their goal of $350K will go towards a number projects on the church building, parish hall, and grounds, including a new roof, painting, and critical infrastructure. St. James' Christmas Bazaar & Bake Sale

St. James' will be holding their annual Christmas Bazaar and Bake Sale event on Saturday, December 10, 2022, from 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM, and will also include a silent auction with special art and antiques. The bazaar will take place in the Church, while the bake sale and other food, refreshments, and crafts will be held under the big white tent. St. James' is located at 65-1237 Kawaihae Road, Kamuela (Waimea).
