The Death of Queen Elizabeth II

The death of Queen Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, was announced today. We can all honor and celebrate her long life marked by a keen sense of duty and of faith. Her messages (especially her Christmas messages) often reflected her deep faith. I think this passage from her 2016 Christmas message best expresses her life:

“Jesus Christ lived obscurely for most of his life, and never travelled far. He was maligned and rejected by many, though he had done no wrong. And yet, billions of people now follow his teaching and find in him the guiding light for their lives. I am one of them because Christ’s example helps me see the value of doing small things with great love, whoever does them and whatever they themselves believe. The message of Christmas reminds us that inspiration is a gift to be given as well as received, and that love begins small but always grows.” (Photos: Joe Giddens/REUTERS)

As we remember the Queen’s life, we can be reminded here in the Diocese of Hawaiʻi of the deep connection between the Royal family of the United Kingdom with that of the Hawaiian monarchy – especially the bond between Queen Victoria and Queen Emma. I hope all the congregations of the Diocese will remember Queen Elizabeth in the Prayers of the People on Sunday, September 11.

The Cathedral will offer a commemorative Solemn Evensong to honor the late Queen on Sunday, October 9, 2022, at 5:30 PM.

ALMIGHTY AND ETERNAL GOD, to whom there is never any prayer made without hope of mercy, be merciful to the soul of your faithful servant, Elizabeth, being departed from this world in the confession of your Holy Name that she and all the departed may be welcomed into the company of thy saints, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rest eternal grant her, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon her. May our sister, Elizabeth, rest in peace. Amen.

KAPUAKUKUI: Celebrating 75 Years at Camp Mokulē'ia

Nestled among the Ironwood trees along the coast of O'ahu's pristine North Shore, is Camp Mokulē'ia, the Diocese of Hawai'i's precious venue starring nature at its finest with breathtaking scenery and dazzling sunsets. Its 75-year history is steeped in the countless memories of generations young and old who frolicked in the turquoise waters, burned a s'mores or two, or escaped to a secluded spot on the beach for a solemn moment of reflection and prayer.

This past Saturday, September 3, 2022, the Camp's year-long observance of its 75th anniversary culminated with a gala event that honored one of its staunchest supporters, the Rev. Canon David Kennedy. READ MORE

CONVENTION 54: IMPORTANT UPDATES

The following are important updates regarding the 54th Annual Meeting of Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawai'i, coming up October 21 & 22, 2022. All clergy, delegates, wardens, administators and lay leaders should pay particular attention:

The Resolutions online submission deadline has passed. (Resolutions can still be made from the floor but will not be included in meeting materials.)
Registration is now open HERE. (To prevent double registrations, first check with your church to see if they will be registering the delegates for your church.)
Nominations are being accepted online HERE until Wednesday, September 21. (Additional nominations may be made from the floor but nominee information will not be included in meeting materials.)
Necrology online submission form is available HERE, and will close on September 21.
The Budget Numbers and Narrative have been posted to the Convention webpage.
Neighbor Island travel requests should be made online HERE.

EDUCATION DAY: PEACE & RECONCILIATION

The theme for this year's Educaton Day ties into the Convention's theme of peace and reconciliation. Included in the day's reconciliation workshops will also be Creation Care and Environmental Justice, Sabeel /Friends of Sabeel North American (FOSNA), and more.

PLENARY OVERVIEW

What is racial reconciliation? But more importantly, how are we as a Diocese called to live out Christ’s amazing love to all? What is the process and what are the steps for parishes to begin the journey of creating a beloved community? What help is available to parishes?

Our plenary address will be a time for all participants to be engaged with the curriculum and goals of the Racial Reconciliation Task Force. Using the course, Difference, and the supplemental Hawaiian sessions, participants will follow the three goals of Difference: be curious, be present, and reimagine.

Be curious! The task force will present the curriculum written so far and provide dates of training and implementation

Be present! The task force will lead us through samples of the curriculum and begin the conversation of how all involved can be focused and practice active listening.

Reimagine! This is a favorite of the task force! What do we want to see after a parish has completed the course? How can we reimagine a new day and live in a beloved community?

Retired Clergy Families: Talk Story Project Continues

The latest installment in the Retired Clergy Families Talk Story Project is now posted on the Diocesan website HERE. In this issue, the Rev. Karen Swanson is featured. The Talk Story Project is a (growing) collection of stories from Diocesan-related retired clergy, spouses, and widows. Stay tuned for more updates!

Announcing The Rev. Dr. George M. Clifford Pastoral Care Assistance Fund

Samaritan Counseling Center Hawai‘i, a nonprofit mental health counseling center, is pleased to announce the establishment of The Rev. Dr. George M. Clifford Pastoral Care Assistance Fund. Named in honor of The Rev. Dr. George M. Clifford, this new fund will help clergy and lay ministers with limited financial resources to receive mental health counseling.

The Rev. Dr. George M. Clifford served as President of Samaritan Counseling Center of Hawaii’s Board of Directors from 2018-2022. He is an Episcopal priest who served 24 years as an active duty U.S. Navy chaplain, retiring at end of 2005 with the rank of Captain. Grant Applications Open for Episcopal Church Constable Fund, Roanridge Trust

Applications are open for two grant opportunities offered annually by The Episcopal Church—Constable Fund grants, which focus on religious education, and Roanridge Trust grants, which support leadership development in small towns and rural communities.

The application deadline for both is November 18, 2022. Application requirements and an application form can be found online HERE.

In April 2022, the Episcopal Church Executive Council approved the awarding of five Constable Fund grants and 11 Roanridge Trust grants—totaling over $460,000. For more information about either grant, contact the Rev. Molly James, deputy executive officer of the General Convention.

TIPS FROM LOT'S LIST - "Never use plastic plates, utensils, etc., even if they are less expensive than compostable. Compostable is better than plastic. Biodegradable (breaking down into smaller size or elements) is not the same as compostable (breaking down into non-toxic material like water, carbon dioxide, organic matter.""

Farewell Father Andrew Arakawa

On Sunday, August 28, the Cathedral bid farewell and mahalo to the Rev. Andrew Arakawa, as he takes leave from his Sunday mornings at the Cathedral to focus fully on his ministry at 'Iolani School. (From The Cathedral of St. Andrew online news)

Keiki Join Communion Altar Party at Holy Nativity

On August 14, good public health reports finally allowed us to invite our keiki to join us at the altar for the Eucharistic Prayer. This was the first time; going forward, we hope to invite them to join us at each of our family services on the "second Sundays" of the month. (From the Holy Nativity weekly e-news)

Coming Up: Emmanuel Hosts Mom's Retreat

Moms of young children are invited to Emmanuel Episcopal Church for a day of recreation on Saturday, September 24, 2022, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Come to enjoy a haku lei making workshop, restorative yoga, lunch, and activities to balance our mind, bodies, and souls. Cost is $50 per person, and financial assistance is available. Although we love little ones, this is a mom's only affair.

The Rev. Dr. Mark Jefferson Returns to Kaua'i

Returning to All Saints' after a visit in January, we were truly blessed and ecstatic to have the Rev. Dr. Mark Andrew Jefferson return to All Saints' Episcopal Church Kaua'i. He shared a timely word on the Great Payback at our first service; and the Hope of Hospitality at second service. He is the Assistant Professor of Homiletics at Virginia Theological Seminary, and always has a home here at All Saints'. (Photos and caption from the All Saints' e-news)

Reminder: Coming up on September 17, St. John's Kula Festival!

St. John's Kula will be hosting their hugely popular 38th Annual Kula Festival on Saturday, September 17, 2022, from 9:00 AM-4:00 PM. Highlights of this year's upcountry tradition will include live entertainment hosted by Mana'o Radio featuring Maui's top artists, hālaus, school bands (including Seabury Hall), and more! There will be lots of ono local food, crafters, silent auction, gift shop, quilt show, Farmer's Market, and an expanded Kids' Zone. Admission is $1 (children under 12 free), and parking is free. A Special Hau'oli La Hanau to Uncle Wataru Kohashi!

September 10, 2022 is Uncle Wataru's 100th birthday!!!

Wataru Kohashi is a WWII veteran of the legendary100th Battalion, 442nd Regiment. He and his family have been faithful members of Holy Apostles for about the last 60 years and he has filled every possible leadership role at Holy Apostles over years.
