Continuing Violence in Our Communities |
My dear Siblings in Christ Jesus,
I have been ruminating and praying about the pervasiveness of violence in our society and in our lives. Nations have besetting sins that then influence the responses of individuals. I think the besetting sins of the United States are shaped by the myths of individualism and materialism. RIP: The Rev. Charles Burger |
A former Priest of the Diocese of Hawaiʻi, the Reverend Charles S. Burger, died in Idaho on February 3rd, at age 84. He was ordained by Bishop Harry Kennedy in 1966. He served as the Vicar of St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Lihue, from 1966 to 1968, and served at Holy Innocents’ Church, Lahaina, from 1968 to 1983. He served various congregations in the Dioceses of Nevada and Idaho after leaving Hawaiʻi in 1983.
ALMIGHTY AND ETERNAL GOD, to whom there is never any prayer made without hope of mercy, be merciful to the soul of your faithful servant, Charles, being departed from this world in the confession of your Holy Name that he and all the departed may be welcomed into the company of thy saints, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Rest eternal grant him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him. May our brother, Charles, rest in peace. Amen.

The Return of the Diocesan Youth Retreat |
Stormy weather didn't stop nearly 30 youth from enjoying a weekend of fun activities and fellowship at Camp Mokulē'ia this past weekend. When thunder made its presence known all morning on Saturday, they shifted from kayaking and ziplining to "Camp in the Damp!" They enjoyed a "Just Dance" dance party, board game marathon, and worked on indoor vision board creations. When the lightning and thunder finally ceased, the continuing rain didn't deter them from a "Minute to Win It" relay challenge, oceanography nature hike, and pool swimming, yes, all in the rain! When asked what their favorite thing at camp was, camp fire was number one and "Just Dance" number two!
"With a theme like Doing a New Thing With God, the weekend was destined to be great," said Lynea Mitchell, the Camp's Assistant Director. "The youth came, they laughed, they cried, they smiled, they laughed some more!" READ MORE

The folks on Maui had lots to celebrate recently with "Celebrations of New Ministry" at two of their congregations. Pictured above, the Rev. John A. Registration Open! All Invited to attend!
Annual Chrism Mass & Spring Training
|
All are invited to attend the Diocese's annual Chrism Mass and Spring Training event taking place on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at The Cathedral of St. Andrew in Honolulu. Chrism Mass begins at 9:00 AM, followed by this year's Spring Training/Education Day at 10:30 AM.
The Plenary session features the Diocese's Listening Team who will share their findings from the past ten months of "listening" to clergy and lay folk around the Diocese. In the afternoon, workshops are being offered on a variety of topics by our Racial Reconciliation Task Force, Creation Care Task Force, Diocesan Support Center Team, and two workshops on church investments/finance. Bishop Bob will also offer a course on Liturgy and "Why We Do What We Do."
Cost is only $20 and includes lunch. The Diocese will pay airfare for neighbor island clergy and one lay person from each congregation. Scholarships are available. Ryan Kusumoto Named as Chair of New Episcopal Church Coalition for Racial Equity and Justice |
Presiding Bishop Michael Curry and Julia Ayala Harris, President of the House of Deputies, appointed our very own Ryan Kusumoto to chair the Coalition for Racial Equity and Justice, which was established following the 80th General Convention last July.
In an anouncement from the Episcopal Church Office of Public Affairs, the coalition is described as "an organizing and networking body 'of Episcopal dioceses, parishes, organizations, and individuals dedicated to the work of becoming the Beloved Community.'”
“This is an opportunity for our church to solidify racial justice and equity as a norm,” Kusumoto said. “We will be holding listening sessions so the constituting group has a wide breath of information and understanding to set up the appropriate infrastructure.”

EYE23 Delegation Announced: Support Upcoming Fundraisers |
|
The second largest event of The Episcopal Church is set to take place at the University of Maryland in July. The Episcopal Youth Event (EYE), held every three years, draws over 1,000 high school youth from around the world for a three-day event of worship, learning, activity, fun and fellowship. The Diocese of Hawai'i is pleased to announce its delegation with representatives from O'ahu, Kaua'i and Hawai'i Island. The Diocese of Hawai'i's delegation will stay for a few more days to perform community service (mission) in the Washington, DC area.
Please keep them in your prayers and be sure to support the delegation over the upcoming months as they fundraise to cover the costs for the trip. A Diocesan-wide t-shirt fundraiser will be coming up soon! Stay tuned!

This year, family members are invited to join in, so get ready for a great day of hiking, prayer, fun and fellowship! Hikes take place on Saturday, March 25, beginning at 9:00 AM. Hikes should be completed by 1:00 PM.

SHUT DOWN RED HILL LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGN -The Diocese's Environmental Justice/Creation Care Task Force has teamed up with Hawai'i Interfaith Power and Light (HIPL) to spearhead a letter writing campaign to shut down the Red Hill storage facility. Visit the Take Action webpage HERE to learn more and join the fight! What is Red Hill & why is it a concern? The Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility, located on the island of Oʻahu, was built around the time the U.S. entered World War II. The tanks currently hold more than 100 million gallons of fuel, and they have been deteriorating. Since 2014, a total of almost 60,000 gallons of fuel leaked into the area around the Fuel Storage Facility. The latest fuel spill in November 2021 contaminated the drinking water of thousands of homes at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and nearby Kapilina Beach Homes. Nearly 93,000 people were affected by this spill.

Coming Up: Maui Episcopal Churches Annual Whale Watch Cruise |
Tickets are now available for the annual Whale Watch Cruise, a fundraiser that supports all four Episcopal churches on Maui. The cruise is set for Sunday, March 5, 2023, from 3:00-5:00 PM (check-in is at 2:15 PM). Tickets are $50. Children age 5 and under are free. The cruise is led by a professional crew of Certified Marine Naturalists aboard the Pacific Whale Foundation's Ocean Odyssey.
