Hawk Generosity on Display!

$35,428

Together, we did it, topping our $15,000 goal for the day, in order to earn our 100% match, for $30,000! Well, we breezed across the target line, ending with a day's total of $35,428, by far the highest total ever raised for any Day of Giving for Hudson Catholic! Our campaign attracted 50 gifts, averaging $408.56 per gift, of which 32 donors gifted a minimum of $200, earning themselves some Hawk Swag which will soon find its way to them.

At this date, our Annual Fund results stand at 87% of our $300,00 target for the year, with $260,188 in the kitty.

A Message From The President

Life on campus has hit warp speed after returning from Easter Break. As we enter the homestretch of the academic year, it seems as if there is something happening every night. In the coming month and a half, we will celebrate the Senior Prom, the De La Salle Awards Banquet, the Junior Ring Ceremony, various Senior Nights for our Spring Sports, the Jack Campion Stage Dedication, Academic Honors Awards for all four year-levels and the Spring Musical.  And that’s just through May!

None of these events are possible without the dedication of our students, staff and coaches.  However, they’re also not possible without the help of YOU – our alumni, families and friends. Your commitment to Hudson Catholic continues to provide countless opportunities for our students. Just this past week, St. John’s University and the Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science began the first steps of a partnership between our schools as they presented to our strongest Sophomore and Junior Math students. This was only made possible with the help of 1972 Hawk alumnus, Bill Cullen. Likewise, our new STEM partnership with Stevens Institute of Technology came about after an initial meeting with 1969 alumnus, Rick Roscitt. Our Fine & Performing Arts programs are accelerating their development with the help of 1970 alumnus, Larry Basinski.  Our Giving Day raised more money than ever before and our Annual Fund has steadily increased.  All because of YOU!

As we begin the first steps of our Capital Campaign, I need to say THANK YOU for all you have done, before asking you to do even more.  Thank you for your commitment to Hudson Catholic. Thank you for believing in our Lasallian Mission. Thank you for believing in our students so much that the majority of you are helping young men and women whom you will most likely never meet in-person. Thank you for your kindness and your love.

St. John Baptist De la Salle wrote, “Young people need the light of watchful guides to lead them on the path of salvation.” YOU are those watchful guides.  YOU are bringing light into their lives.

And The Survey Said!!..........

We are in the preliminary stages of a planning effort to determine how best to proceed with fundraising to improve our campus infrastructure, increase our endowment, and invest in our high-caliber programs.

Hudson Catholic is partnering with CCS Fundraising, a strategic fundraising firm, to help us best understand the opportunities for a potential campaign, assessing the opinions and perspectives among our Hawk constituencies. Within the next few weeks, you may receive an email through Qualtrics containing a brief but very important survey for which we ask you to participate, frankly and thoughtfully.

You'll find a link to the Background Statement in that email. Please take time to examine and reflect on the plan and share your thoughts and impressions in the brief 16 question-survey. Your feedback will be vital for determining the best path forward into Hudson Catholic’s strong and bright future.

Jack Campion, 'Force of Nature'

We found a recent blog by Jim Sweeney '73 in the 'HawkTalk73' Facebook site so descriptive of the man we are honoring on April 28th, we are reprinting it here, with permission.

Jim writes: "OK Hawk 73, two weeks from tonight we will be celebrating the dedication of the stage to Jack Campion. Jack was a teacher/performance artist who brought electricity into his classroom. Phrases such as 'deus es machina' and 'en medias res' were solidified into our brains through his teaching. He was not interested in spoon-feeding knowledge to his students, only to be regurgitated back. His aim was to kickstart our thinking by asking pointed questions and having us come up with reasoned thoughts. Our minds might have been on sports, girls, and future college plans, but once you sat down in his class, you were jolted back to the present. He pranced around the room reciting passages as well as any thespian -- "A little more kin, a lot less kindred my Lord." He was apt to bang an empty desk into yours if he thought your mind was elsewhere. His style was dynamic without being didactic. So if you have the chance, come on out and help us cheer on this force of nature."

When You Know It's Time to Donate

"Hello, is this Father O'Malley?"

"It is."

"This is the IRS. Can you help us?"

"I can."

"Do you know a Ted Houlihan?"

"I do."

"Is he a member of your parish?"

"He is."

"Did he donate $10,000 to the church?"

"He will."

Alumni Spotlight

To the oft-asked question, "How do I get in Alumni Spotlight?", the direct, Jersey City response is: 'you send me your stuff'. To: gferrari@hudsoncatholic.org

Bragging Rights. Louis King '18 vaulted into 3rd Place among all-time NBA scorers among Hawks, passing inaugural Hawk varsity basketball coach George Blaney, at 117. On Easter Sunday, Louis poured in 20 points for the Sixers against the Brooklyn Nets, to earn bragging rights in the Hawk annals, with 129! -- MSB

Paying Respects. Armand Campos '10 shared with us that he attended the burial of Brother Ed Sheehy, FSC, in De La Salle Cemetery in Ammandale, MD, bringing prayers from among Hudson Catholic alumni and our greetings to the other members of attending FSC. The Brothers who Armand spoke to echoed that Hudson was Brother Ed's favorite assignment.

Minding the Nation's Finances. Tom Steffens '81 was recently selected to be the Deputy Chief Financial Officer for the U.S. Department of Defense. Prior to this assignment, he served for six years as the Chief Financial Officer for the Army Corp of Engineers headquartered in Washington D.C.

Hawks on YES. Hey, who are those guys with Mark Medina '95? We think that's Jack Curry '82 and David Cone, but cannot figure out how or why.

Muscle Man. Marco Poisler '88 is newly published in Marine Technology Magazine. His article is called: Doing the Heavy Lifting: moving oversize, or just plain massive, equipment requires serious muscle. For a pdf version of the article: advancement@hudsoncatholic.org

Writing High. Joe Pagetta '91, Director of Communications at Tennessee State Museum, proudly shares that his communications team picked up a gold medal at the 2022 Southeastern Museums Conference and multiple Awards of Excellence at the Tennessee Association of Museums Conference. The honors were all for creative marketing work done in the past year.

Memories

Class President:Hugo Carvajal headed up the Student Council, along with Anthony Romano, Patrick McGrath, Ray Berrios and Jonathan Calderon.

Valedictorian: Steven Torre; Salutatorian: Luigi Cendana

Principal: Brother Tim Ahern

Top Athletes: Tom Bender, The Salinardi Twins -- Darren and Joe, and Nick Matulic (rest in peace) - football; Rick Tauber and AJ Drago - hockey; the four starters on the basketball team who were together since freshman year -- Tyrell Brown, Taurean Brown, Daniel Mihalinec, and Hugo Carvajal, an led our team to four straight years of victories over Prep, and to the HCIAL County Semi-Finals, losing a nail-biter by three points to 22-1 Emerson, and upsetting Delbarton in the State Tourney before bowing to Don Bosco Prep. Hugo recalls a regular season tilt, in which the Hawks nearly beat Nick Mariniello's powerhouse State Champion Bloomfield Tech! Our coach that year -- Hudson County Sports Hall of Famer Steve Ricciardi Sr. - a North Hudson County legend in the CYO and AAU basketball world -- in his first season at the helm, transformed a prior year losing record into a winning season, but not before starting off 1-8 against a loaded schedule and finishing 14-11. This was an unheralded but stellar campaign in the annals of Hawk basketball.

Best Athletic Team: Baseball -- County Champs, led by Frankie Flynn and Rick Tauber.

We are looking to 'Stay Connected' with Ebenneze Arrieta / Ricardo Gonzalez / Nicholas Lopez/ Jose Rebelo / Jose Santana / Doug Stoveken / Raymond Ubaldo / Christopher Urban / Asaru Wright / Darren Wright. The Reilly Legacy!

Mack Reilly '14 and Peter Reilly '81 became a Hawk Legacy Family in 2010. Unfortunately, Peter did not live to see Mack graduate. He passed away in September 2013 as Mack entered his senior year. Mack grew up in the Heights, attended St. Nicholas Grammar School before Hudson, and William Paterson after Hudson. Mack became a member of Jersey City's Finest in 2018, where he is presently a Police Officer. Mack lives in Verona.

The Thybulle Legacy!

In what we believe to be the first Father-Son-Daughter Legacy Hawk Family, we are thrilled to present Louis Thybulle '86, son Miles '21, and upcoming June graduate, Maya '23!

Miles is attending and playing baseball at the College of Southern Maryland. Maya has been accepted to all of her collegiate choices. Proud dad, Louis, is excited to see where she will attend. Not leaving any grass growing under his feet, Dad Louis has just moved to Charlotte, NC!

The Changing Neighborhood

The St. Peter's University campus just got even closer than ever to Hudson Catholic. It's been some time since needing to walk the length of Montgomery Street one full block from Bergen Avenue to Kennedy Blvd to reach the Peacocks' campus. With the addition of 762 Montgomery, a/k/a Panepinto Hall, as a residence hall, SPU is now just one building behind Prince of Pizza, thanks to longtime benefactor, Mr. Joseph Panepinto. In addition to adding to the SPU campus, the new structure replaces a blighted warehouse on that stretch and is indeed a welcome new neighbor.

Turn Your Brother (and Sister) In!

(We Need Their Email Addresses)

We lose touch with some of our graduates who move around, go off to college, start careers, get married, etc. Help us find them again and make it harder for us to lose touch. Many on this list have siblings who are Hawk alumni, so turn them in at advancement@hudsoncatholic.org or send them to hudsoncatholic.org/stay-connected to update their contact info.

“Except for the poor shepherds, no one even thought of Jesus when he was born. It is only in our own poverty that we can share in some way in the lowliness of Christ at his birth. And it is only in our own poverty that the poor come looking for us.”
