Principal's Message

Dear Hutton Families,

One of the things we want for every Hawk is for them to find a place where they can connect, belong, and discover something they enjoy. This connects directly to Spokane Public Schools’ Engage in Real Life initiative and our belief that a child’s school experience extends beyond the classroom.

Research shows that students who participate in extracurricular activities often experience stronger connections to school, better attendance and engagement, and positive academic outcomes. These experiences also give students opportunities to build friendships, develop confidence, practice teamwork, and discover new interests and talents.

Throughout the year, we will offer a variety of opportunities for our Hawks, including World Languages, Pokémon Club, LEGO Club, Kids Connection, Choir, Cross Country, and more. Some activities are grade-level specific and will be offered at different times throughout the year. We also know that involvement doesn’t have to happen at school! Sports, arts, clubs, community organizations, and other activities throughout Spokane are great ways for students to get connected and engage in real life.

Our hope is that every Hawk finds something that is their thing—something they look forward to, feel connected to, and are excited to be part of. Please continue to watch the Hawk Headlines throughout the year as we share opportunities and registration information.

You can also learn more and explore opportunities through the SPS Engage in Real Life initiative.

Let’s help our Hawks get connected, try something new, and discover all the ways they can shine!

With Hawk Pride,

LaTonya Simmons

Wireless Devices

(phones, tablets, smartwatches)

School district policy 3245 states that wireless devices, including wireless (cell) phones, smartwatches, ear buds, and the like are not permitted to be accessed during the school day, including the lunch period. If items are on campus, they will be stored in the scholar’s backpack. If the scholar is without a backpack, the teacher and scholar will create a plan for storage for the duration of the day.

The "Why"

Cell phone use by adolescents is widely known to contribute to mental health issues, and they are a disruption to the learning environment. In June of 2024, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy called for warning labels on social media. He also published an advisory on social media and youth mental health.

The research is very clear on the effects social media and smartphones have on students.

School Documents to Review

Yellow Bus Transportation

Spokane Public Schools partners with Zum Services Inc. to provide transportation for approximately 4,000 general education students and more than 800 special education students, traveling 9,000 miles daily.

You must know your student's ID number to register. If you don't know your student's ID number, submit your email address to this form and you will receive an email with your associated students' ID number

The Hutton NEST System

The Hutton Nest System builds a positive school culture where every Hawk has a place to belong, connect, contribute, and lead. By bringing classrooms together across grade levels, our four Nests create smaller communities within our larger Hawk Flock, strengthening relationships and building schoolwide pride. Throughout the year, students work together to demonstrate our HAWKS expectations, earn marbles toward shared goals, and celebrate their collective success through Nest celebrations and quarterly Kettle Assemblies. Most importantly, the Nest System reminds students that every Hawk matters and when we work together, our whole flock soars.
