Website Overhaul: Faculty and Staff Profile Page Migration

To ensure a seamless transition of profile pages to the new website in August 2026, a “data snapshot” date has been established for all faculty and staff profiles. This snapshot allows the web team to accurately capture and migrate information to the new platform. Please review your profile page and complete any profile updates by Friday, April 24. Early Engagement Course

Have you ever wanted to apply for a grant but changed your mind? Did you get cold feet, or did you feel the application required additional support? Did you wish for a partner or mentor to assist in the completion of the proposal?

For the first time, with the support of the Dean’s Office, CHSS is offering its faculty an entry level grant writing class. This early engagement course is an eight-week synchronous online course that promises to develop a grant proposal that is worthy of submission. 

The class will meet for two hours every two weeks. All participants will work on grant proposals of their own choosing with the goal of submitting a document at the close of the program. The program will start in late May and conclude in July.

Due to the expected number of participants, we are reviewing applications. If interested, please complete this form and return it to Leslie Wilson wilsonl@montclair.edu by Friday April 24^th. Decisions will be distributed by email.

Faculty Conversation on Grants

CHSS faculty are invited to an informal conversation on grant-seeking on Monday, May 11, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. This session will bring together faculty who have secured external funding with colleagues who are curious about what’s involved or interested in learning from others’ experiences. The session will also include a brief presentation on the use of AI in the pre-award grant process.

External funding can support individual scholarly productivity, enhance faculty and departmental visibility, and open opportunities for collaboration beyond the institution. This low‑pressure, conversational session will include brief faculty perspectives, open Q&A, and time for informal discussion with experienced grant recipients.

Whether you’re actively considering a grant, thinking about it for the future, or simply want to hear how colleagues have approached the process, all CHSS faculty are welcome.

Express Yourself! A Day of Creativity, Community and Discovery

Step into a world of creativity, movement and shared ideas at Express Yourself!, a vibrant day of arts, culture and creative exploration taking place on Saturday, May 9, in partnership with the Montclair Literary Festival. Open to students, faculty and the wider community, this celebration invites everyone to explore creative expression in many forms.

Throughout the day, participants can take part in hands-on workshops and interactive experiences led by artists, performers and educators from across the university. Through words, movement, music and creative practice, Express Yourself! invites us all to share experiences, learn new skills and engage with one another in meaningful ways. All workshops are open to all and free, but registration is required.

Date: Saturday, May 9, workshops all day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Dr. Jason Abbott (Political Science and Law) will deliver a public lecture as part of the Lectures on Tap series in Brooklyn, New York. The lecture, Godzilla: Japan, Trauma, and the Unkillable Monster, examines Godzilla as a cultural lens through which to understand Japan’s postwar experience

The Spring Interdisciplinary Showcase brought together faculty, students and collaborators from across the University demonstrating how interdisciplinary inquiry thrives through shared effort and perspective.

An event co-hosted by the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) Northern New Jersey Society and the Center for Heritage and Archaeological Studies offered a rare look at the innovative methods used to investigate and preserve ancient heritage increasingly affected by rising groundwater.

Brad Forenza (Social Work and Child Advocacy) interviewed Dr. Jeanette Takamura, MSW for The New Social Worker, a social work careers magazine. 

Fanny Lauby (Political Science) is quoted in this MS Now article about Analilia Mejia's special election victory to fill the U.S. House seat vacated by New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill.

Jason Abbott (Political Science and Law), who published "Unjust War, Unjust Conduct: Just War Theory and the Iran War" in Fair Observer, an independent, nonprofit media organization that engages in citizen journalism and civic education.

Milton Fuentes (SWCA, Psychology) has been selected as the keynote speaker for Voices of the Generation: Research Across Disciplines at the Felician University Research Conference to be held on Friday, April 24.

Mark Rotella (Coccia Institute) participated in a discussion on AI and Creative Writing at the University of Calabria (Cosenza) with Professors Margherita Ganeri and Domenico Talia.

AJ Kelton is curating a living document of articles on AI in the humanities, social sciences, and/or pedagogy. The document is searchable and each entry includes a citation and a 150-word AI-generated synopsis, organized by topic headings. Those with access receive a brief update on Fridays listing new articles added that week, including the citation and a 50-word summary.
