Proposed Legislation for School Calendars

Reach out to your representatives NOW!
The Alabama State Legislators are currently considering a school calendar bill that would be introduced on the first day of the Legislative Session which begins on February 4th.
This bill is similar to a bill that was introduced several years ago that lengthened the summer for students and decreased breaks during the school year. The business and tourism industry and summer camps are again lobbying for bills that would create start and end dates for all public schools. A school calendar should revolve around what is best for student learning and instruction.
If the bill is adopted, it would change our 2020-2021 calendar which has already been approved and published.  This move has the potential to negatively impact our attendance rates as some have already scheduled fall break and Thanksgiving trips.
Also, research shows that students who don't have educational opportunities in the summer time lose months in reading and math over the summer. The increased time off will only increase this loss.  More breaks during the school year help students, staff, and faculty avoid the fatigue that often comes with months of coursework without appropriate breaks.
Ultimately, it should be up to local school districts to decide what is best for the students.

The calendar on the LEFT (with red line at the top) shows what our school year might look like if the legislation passes.  The calendar on the RIGHT shows the calendar which has previously been approved for our district for next year if nothing changes.  Notice that if this legislation passes, our kids could be going to school from August 17th through November 25th with only TWO single days off (Sept 7th Labor Day and November 11 Veterans Day), followed by a TWO day break for Thanksgiving.  This is basically 4 months of school with 4 days off.

Please note~the proposed calendar with the red line only shows a POSSIBLE schedule should the proposed bill become law.

Library Volunteers

The sign up for library volunteers is up. Most important are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Friday mornings, since our library aide isn't there those days.  Volunteers scan the books out to the students, check books in and shelve the books as time permits.  Please consider working a shift in our library.
Please note - if you can only work a portion of the shift listed, that is ok.  We appreciate all the help we can get!

2020 - 2021 PTA

We are starting to think toward next year in regard to PTA.  The board has named Tamitha Dollman the Nominating Committee chair.  She will need volunteers to assist her on the nominating committee.  This committee presents the slate of PTA Board officers for election in April.  If you would like to serve on this committee please contact Tamitha at tamithadollman@gmail.com
