 A Message from Phil Hawley

This holiday season will be unlike any other, to top off a year unlike any other. The pandemic continues to produce uncertainty and we all are looking for ways to navigate through these unprecedented times the best we can.

Despite the challenges of this past year, it is also a time that's bringing out the best in many people-from the first responders and healthcare workers fighting on the front-lines, to the essential workers providing food, products and services. On behalf of everyone at Hawley & Associates, we are incredibly thankful to all of our clients who are serving and caring for the children, families and communities in need during these difficult times. The need has never been greater. We are proud to partner in your mission of serving others.

Throughout this holiday season, and as we move into a new year, we wish you moments of peace amid the turmoil, heartfelt connections with family and friends, even if we can't be with them in person, and the warmth of memories from holidays past.

Have a safe and blessed holiday season.

10 Tips on Reducing Your Commercial Auto Risks

car-sales-lot.jpg
U.S. commercial auto insurers report worst losses in a decade, according to a recent AM Best report.  The growth in incurred losses has outpaced earned premium growth.

With a combination of these skyrocketing losses and sudden changes in insurers' appetites, it is making for an unpleasant journey finding affordable commercial auto coverage.

Businesses must actively manage the risks that drive up premiums. Here are some risk management tips to help you improve your experience rating and keep your premiums down:
  • Consider using a monitoring service, such as SAMBA, to automate your drivers monitoring program.
  • Add GPS tracking to your vehicles, helping to monitor vehicle location and speeds.
  • Pre-screen all new hires by obtaining DMV reports.
  • If your driver has two or more incidents, you don't want them on the road.
  • DUI or DWI's are a deal-breaker.
  • Raise your deductible. For best results, keep your deductible above $2,500 or so. This can help you keep any fender-benders off the books.
  • Maintain an ongoing safe driver program or a "How's My Driving" program. Consider rewarding drivers for incident free driving.
  • Install backup cameras in all your vehicles.
  • If your state allows, consider a safe-driving clause in the employment agreement.
  • Expensive vehicles mean higher premiums.  Don't spend more on vehicles than necessary.
If you don't own any company vehicles and use personal, hired or rental vehicles for business use, you should consider Hired and Non-Owned Auto coverage. The number of vehicles you use, the value of the vehicles, the demographics of the drivers, and driving records can all affect the cost of hired and non-owned auto insurance.
