Welcome to this week's edition of Hayes Town News. We begin with the awful news of the murder of a 15 year old boy in Blyth Road. It is hard to know what to say about how things like this happen in our society but the 'Hayes Together. Stays Together' event on Wednesday is one chance for people of goodwill so share their thoughts on what might be done to try and reduce the epidemic of knife crime that seems to have seized too many young people.

Meanwhile the number of coronavirus cases is on the increase again across the country and in London in particular. It seems from media reports over the weekend that the Government is going to be forced to postponed the relaxation of restrictions that were due to be lifted from Monday 21 June.

Tragic death of 15 year old boy in Blyth Road

Residents of Blyth Road, staff at the Global Academy and building workers at The Old Vinyl Factory were shocked early on the morning of Friday 11 June by the brutal stabbing to death of a young boy on his way to school. Jalan Woods-Bell was a student at the Academy and only 15 years old. According to media reports he was stabbed multiple times and efforts at the scene to try and save him were in vain. The thoughts of everybody in Hayes must go out to his family and friends and to all the students and staff at the Academy who must be in state of total shock at this senseless loss of life.

The BBC reported on Saturday 12 June that a fifteen year old boy has been charged with the murder. The picture is courtesy of the Met Police and taken from the BBC web site

Hayes Together event more important than ever

As previously reported in Hayes Town News an online community consultation is planned for Wednesday 16 June. Called a 'World Cafe' it has the slogan 'Hayes Together, Stays Together' and it is all about how to make Hayes a better and safer place in which to live and work. It could not be more relevant to what has happened but so far the number of people who have signed up for the event is less than 50.

There will be two sessions to choose between - 1pm to 3pm or 7pm to 9pm. The event has been initiated by the Metropolitan Police and the programme devised by MutualGain - an organisation committed to working and engaging with local communities. It is assisted by a small group of people involved in Hayes, including myself.

The World Café is planned to be the first event in a programme of Hayes Together, Stays Together events which will take place over the next year. The outcome of this online conversation will set priorities for the next phase which will be looking to invest money into small community-based ideas.

Push still on for vaccinations

The latest figures show that the number of coronavirus cases is on the increase again. The slightly good news is that Hillingdon has dropped down the league table of the 32 London Boroughs after weeks near the top. It remains clear that we still need more people to be vaccinated to help make everybody safe. One day left to show your support for bereaved children

The Big Give Challenge will be finishing at noon on Tuesday 15 June and Harlington Hospice is trying to raise money for its Children and Adolescent Bereavement Service. During the pandemic they have seen an increase in the need for this service. The grieving process has been disrupted due to the lockdown and there have been more cases of self-harm and thoughts about suicide. The aim is to raise £5000 which will be doubled by the Big Give to £10,000. To find out more about the service click here and to make a donation click here but please don't delay.

Save our local pharmacies - sign the petition

According to the National Pharmacy Association thousands of small pharmacies are at risk of closure because of long term under-funding combined with crippling extra costs of delivering NHS healthcare during the pandemic. They are trying to persuade the Government to keep its promise to cover these extra costs and reduce the risk of widespread closures. Their petition is just short of 100,000 signatures and they are asking more people to sign by clicking here.

Theft of keyless cars on the increase

In 2020 a vehicle was stolen every 7 minutes in the UK and the theft of keyless vehicles continues to be a major problem. Hillingdon Neighbourhood Watch (HNW) has been looking at industry innovations to find ways of combating this type of crime and they have found a project produced by a company called Hard-Off Security Ltd. It fits inside the battery compartment of your key fob detects movement of the fob. If the fob has not moved for 20 seconds, it cuts off the power making “Relay Theft” impossible. The fob is only activated again when movement is detected, for example when you pick it up to use your vehicle.
