HEAD ELEMENTARY LINKS
The following Padlet address will become live on Monday.
|Dear Parents, |
I am so impressed with the amount of reading that is taking place by our students. Last month, students read more than 12,000,000 words. This is just for the month of November. Studies show the more students read, the more successful they are in school. Thanks for encouraging your children to read nightly. A great way to continue supporting reading is our Holiday Book Fair. The book fair will run until December 11.
As we see on the news daily, Covid is still alive and well. I want to let you know that I have been quarantined for 14 days, as my husband has tested positive for Covid. I currently do not have any symptoms, but must follow CDC guidelines and stay home. In my absence, Cheri Carter, retired principal from Brookwood Elementary, will be filling in for me. I will be checking emails daily, so if you have a concern, please feel free to email me.
A reminder, as we head into flu season, remember to wash hands frequently, stay six feet apart from others, stay home if you are sick and wear a mask. This helps keep all of us safe and healthy.
We are continuing to collect $5.00/$10.00 gift cards to honor the hard work our teachers are doing. We will use these gift cards for prizes in a Bingo game. Thank you to all those that have already contributed. This will be a fun way to honor all the hard work our teachers have done this semester.
Please join us over the next two weeks for holiday spirit days. Both digital and in-person students can dress up in the theme for the day and post pictures. This will be a fun way to engage students. Please see the calendar above for details. I cannot wait to see all the pictures!
Have a great week.

Our August challenge: Submissions are closed!
Our September challenge: Visit a natural outdoor body of water (creek, stream, waterfall, river, lake, ocean, or sea) or outdoor water activity (water sprinkler, water balloons, swimming pool, water slide)
October Yearbook Challenge: zoo, animal, sanctuary, farm, or pet care. (Alpaca farm, yellow river sanctuary, do something with your pet, Stone Mountain barnyard, visit a pet store or a pet shelter)
November Yearbook Challenge: Take a hike, walk your neighborhood, go on a bike ride, scooter ride, roller skating, rollerblading
Thank you to all of our parents, teachers and administrators who have already joined PTA this year. For those who haven't, we hope you'll join us soon! PTA supports our school, teachers and students throughout the year and does not require any volunteer time from its members. We cannot do what we do, without your support! You can join PTA and support our school for just $6 per year. If you are able to give a little more to our program, we would love for you to purchase a membership package for just $24. This package includes 4 PTA memberships, and a FREE surprise R.D. Head spirit gift!
If you would like to volunteer, please contact any PTA Executive Committee member, we would love to have you!
At the Nov. 19 School Board meeting, district leaders shared two changes to the calendar for 2nd semester.
The calendar now calls for students to return to learning (in the classroom or online) on Thursday, Jan. 7, a day later than originally planned.
In another calendar change designed to extend planning opportunities for teachers, four days in the spring-Jan. 26, March 2, March 16, and April 20-have been designated as Digital Learning Days (DLD). On these school days, all students, both in-person and digital learners, will learn at home. Learning will be asynchronous, meaning that students will not have a scheduled log-in time or planned "Zoom" session. Instead, they will complete assigned work at their own pace. Students who are unable to complete assignments on DLDs will be given the opportunity to complete assignments when they return to school.
On Jan. 6 and on the four Digital Learning Days in the spring, GCPS will provide meals for curbside pick-up at schools and will deliver along all middle school bus routes countywide.

We are having a huge push for AR through the school. Kindergarten and 1st grade students who are reading an E level are able to take quizzes. The in-person students have been taught this skill from 1st grade and up, but we are asking for your support on this at home whether students are in-person or digital, for our younger students. Also, encouragement for your older students is helpful too! If parents or older siblings could help guide the younger students through the process it would help. Once they get the hang of it.....they will fly! Your help is appreciated!
Do you remember last month our students read almost 10 million words in the month of October! Well, The November totals are in and.....drumroll....In November we have read OVER 12 million words!
Here are the top 3 readers on each grade level....not individual classes.
We will be announcing midyear results when we return to school in January, so AR will count all through December. In January, Mrs. Johnson will announce million word club, half million word club and so on. I think a lot of students will be surprised at their half-year totals!
November challenge top 3 on each grade level!
