Head of School Search Update

Dear Berkeley Community,

We are pleased to share an update on Berkeley’s search for its next Head of School. In late September, Carney Sandoe & Associates (CS&A) visited campus and met with the Search Committee, administrators, students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and Trustees. In addition, 914 members of the Berkeley community completed the recent Head of School survey.

Some of the most compelling and consistent themes that emerged from the survey include:

  • a deep commitment to attracting, retaining, and supporting exceptional faculty, recognizing that outstanding teachers are central to Berkeley’s academic excellence, student growth, and enduring strength as a community.

  • a continued focus on academic excellence and college preparation, ensuring that Berkeley graduates are not only well-prepared for success in higher education but also distinguished by intellectual curiosity, moral character, and confidence in their abilities

  • a thoughtful balance between growth and community, with attention to maintaining small class sizes, a personal and connected school culture, and the distinctive community spirit that defines Berkeley, even as the school continues to expand and evolve

  • an openness to innovation, particularly in the thoughtful integration of technology and artificial intelligence, while remaining grounded in Berkeley’s traditions, values, and mission

  • a call for strong, visible, student-centered leadership, seeking a Head of School who is approachable, authentic, and present in the life of the school—one who builds trust across all constituencies and guides Berkeley with clarity, compassion, and conviction, while being mindful of the traditions and qualities that we have today

With your feedback in mind, we have drafted and posted the Head of School Position Description on the Head of School Search webpage. To ensure broad and strategic outreach, the description has also been shared nationally through the extensive network of our search partner, CS&A. This document articulates our mission, values, and aspirations, as well as the attributes and experiences we believe our next Head of School will need to lead Berkeley.

Thank you for your valuable input and support as we advance the work to find the next great leader of Berkeley. We will continue to communicate as the search process unfolds. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Search Committee via headofschoolsearch@berkeleyprep.org
