Dear Taft Community,

As we embark on the search for the new head of school, we wanted to give you some early thoughts on the process and the way forward. First, and most important, is our goal of communicating with you regularly: the first step being this letter and a new head of school search webpage on which we will continually post relevant information. We know how important this search is for the future of Taft and how much our Taft community cares about this transition. Please rest assured that the committee understands this responsibility. We want to thank our committee members who will take time from their extremely busy schedules in service to Taft. They truly embody the Taft motto, “Non ut sibi ministretur sed ut ministret.”

We have already begun to have conversations with the leading search firms in the country and will be holding in-depth interviews with two to three finalists over the coming weeks. Our goal is to have a search firm identified and hired around our next board meeting at the end of April. Following that, the committee will work with the selected search firm to canvass the Taft community for feedback and will prepare a candidate brief. This brief will allow the search firm to start reaching out to candidates this spring and summer.

We know that Taft’s reputation, community, and success will draw incredibly talented candidates from across the industry. We are in the envious position of attracting the very best from the next generation of school leaders: individuals who will not only cherish the Taft history and ethos but will also guide us through the necessary changes that education will require over the next decades.

We look forward to finding our next head of school to build upon the two decades of exceptional leadership by Willy MacMullen and the nearly three decades of Lance Odden before him. We thank all of you who have written to us; we have heard your input, and we look forward to working with our dedicated and thoughtful committee members to steward this process forward. We will keep you apprised as we have meaningful updates to share.

Regards,
