John Welker - Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre
John Welker is co-founder and artistic director of Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre in Atlanta. Before taking the huge leap into creating a ballet company from scratch, he was principal artist with Atlanta Ballet.
He and his company are in Vero Beach this summer for the 2023 Riverside Dance Festival, which culminates next weekend with performances at Riverside Theatre. Welker took time for a conversation on Arts Blast on the Air and for a lengthy Q&A for this newsletter.
| |
Why are you in Vero Beach and how did you get together with Adam? Two years ago Adam began a conversation with us to present Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre for the 2023 Riverside Dance Festival. It was still in the midst of the pandemic when Adam reached out, so right away I admired his leadership and planning and knew it was going to be a great festival and experience for us.
Tell readers about the works on your program here: The Man in Black is a cowboy boots ballet set to the music of Johnny Cash. Using steps from popular country western styles, choreographer James Kudleka created movement that visually and viscerally represents the tone and spirit of the music in celebration of the proud and independent American spirit. The second piece on the program Confronting Genius is based off of author Elizabeth Gilbert's popular TED talk about the pitfalls of artistic creation. Choreographer Heath Gill uses text, music, and dance that expresses the humorous, frustrating, and whimsical relationship between a person and their creative ideas.
| |
Talk about your company: In a nutshell, Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre was created in 2017 by five principal ballet dancers and co-founders (including me), who collectively shared the same vision of dance. By bringing together our classical and contemporary dance forms and the individual strengths of each of us, we become celebrated for the creation of daring and theatrical dance works. Through much hard work and determination we are now able to share our mission of connecting folks through the beauty, power, and humanity of dance by producing accessible professional performances, offering dance education classes through our Terminus Ballet School, and presenting free-to-the-public programming that expands conventional definitions of ballet and serve as a cultural terminus for the greater arts community.
How many dancers do you have? Currently six (6) full time dancers with various guest artists dependent on our programming needs.
Are they permanent positions in the company? Yes, our dancers are hired on an annual full time basis through each Fall and Spring season.
| |
Where does your funding come from? As an arts non-profit we have a good mix between earned and unearned income sources. Currently most of our contributions are split between individual and Foundation grant giving.
Are there other dance organizations in the Atlanta area? We're very lucky to have many fellow dance organizations in Atlanta as well as a very vibrant theatre and musical scene that we like to collaborate with.
Where do you (the company) perform? We perform throughout the metro Atlanta area including Kennesaw State University Dance Theater, Georgia Tech Ferst Theatre, outdoors in the community of Serenbe, the Woodruff Arts Center, and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.
Do you have a home base? Our home base is at the TULA Arts Center in the Atlanta community of Buckhead.
How did you get involved in dance — from the beginning? My older sister, who is also a dancer, was the one who got me into my first ballet lesson at 10 years old. By age 13 I became more serious about ballet and dance and everything took off from there.
Are you active in any other art forms? Music? Painting? I wish I was, honestly these days I don't have much time for too much outside of Terminus, but I did have many piano lessons over the course of 7 years growing up and still really enjoy listening to music.

Meet Gina Saxton, a student dancer
In her ninth year with the Riverside Dance Festival, Stuart resident Gina Saxton said she learns something new from the visiting dance companies every year. “This year we are exploring ballet and contemporary dance styles and how ballet and contemporary dances are created.” The students are learning three dances, all different from each other, Saxton said. “Overall, the experience is amazing and I’m learning a lot from Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre.”
As a young student, Saxton attended Martin County schools, including South Fork High School and the Clark Advanced Learning Center, and has recently earned a degree in Elementary Education at the University of Central Florida. Teaching isn’t in the immediate future for Saxton. “I will be moving back to Orlando and doing the Disney College Program.”

Aerial Antics Celebrates 49 Years with One-Hit Wonders!
The Aerial Antics Youth Circus performances next weekend mark 49 years since the program was created by the City of Vero Beach Recreation Department at the Heritage Center in 1974. Back then it was called the Physical Arts Center and recreational gymnastics and circus aerial classes were offered. The program was developed by Pegi Wilkes, manager of the recreation programs for the city. Patty Howard, assistant recreation director, said, “Pegi was a child of the circus…her mother Joy Gould was a circus performer/aerialist for the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Baily Circus. Their love for circus-style performing arts was the catalyst for our almost 50 year old tradition called the Aerial Antics Youth Circus.”
When Wilkes retired in 2001, staff members Howard and Angie Holshouser took over and “have kept this unique program alive and thriving for the kids in our community.” he AAYC started with recreational gymnastics and circus aerial classes held at the PAC (Heritage Center) that culminated in an annual performance always held in August on the Heritage Center lawn/Pocahontas Park. The program has evolved into a year-round gymnastics and performing arts program that includes weekly classes, elite performing teams and 9-weeks of summer camp all of which have the opportunity to perform in the Aerial Antics Youth Circus.
While classes and programs are held at Leisure Square, the 49th Annual Aerial Antics Youth Circus will be held at Saint Edward’s School August 3 - 5 at 7 p.m. Tickets for the Aerial Antics Youth Circus are $8 for adults and $7 for children and seniors. Children under 5 are admitted free. A multi-show pass is available for those who want to attend multiple shows. To purchase tickets in advance, please go to Leisure Square (3705 16th Street, Vero Beach
|
Eighteen-year-old Vero Beach resident Rylie Walker has participated in Aerial Antics programs for 12 years as part of the Spotlights performing arts group. She does “a multitude of things,” she said, “from performing on implements such as the cloud swing and the aerial loops. I also do acrobatic partner tricks, dance, and tumble.” Walker has been interested in flipping and climbing since childhood. “I used to be a pro at the monkey bars ;),” she said.
When her family moved to Vero Beach, her mother’s coworkers recommended Leisure Square. “She decided to put me in classes. I did Kidnastics and Aerial every year until I was put into a group.” When she saw the performing arts girls doing “cool dances and aerials,” she knew she’d found her place.
| |
Being a performer in Aerial Antics Youth Circus means lots of rehearsal time, but that’s just fine with Walker. “The rehearsals for AA are always my favorite. While I love practice, the rehearsals are always so much fun. We go over our dance routine at least three times, and practice our aerials at least once. We may fix some things that aren’t working and don’t look good as well. While we are all stressed at high levels because we want the audience to be entertained and we want to look good.”
The best part for Walker is the camaraderie: “We also still make time to laugh and bond with one another. The rehearsals are a bonding experience, we laugh, cry, sweat, hug, and do everything with our coaches and each other. Rehearsals are the thing i’m going to miss the most.”
The gymnast has interests outside of Aerial Antics, she said. “I also cheer, coach cheer, coach three of the performing arts groups; I ran track, and I play the cello.“ Walker will leave Indian River State College next month with an Associate’s Degree in criminal justice, transferring to Mississippi State University to continue her education.
|
Kaitlyn Left will miss the program when she leaves for college in the fall. She will be majoring in pre-med at South Alabama.
Left was only two years old when she began her 17 years with the City of Vero Beach program. "My mom did it when she was growing up and it look fun so I wanted to give it a try and I fell in love with this sport. The coaches and my teammates me so much to me I wouldn’t be where I am at today if I didn’t have them by my side every step of the way."
In the staged performances, Left dances with the younger kids, dances, flips, and does aerial work. Rehearsals are a fun part of the experience for her. "We stretch, then we get up and tumble. We love to joke around and have fun when we are tumbling, and then we dance for the rest of practice."

Glenda Skarie and I first crossed paths many years ago, in a precious metal clay workshop at Vero Beach Museum of Art. (She just reminded me it was in 2008.)
|
We'd meet for coffee once in a while when she was passing through Vero but eventually lost touch. Then, last April, I saw her name on Stuart's Creek Arts District website and reached out. Her reply was a shock. Facebook message April 2022:
"Hey, doing ok. Had a very difficult year. Had Covid in Aug and was hospitalized, survived and went back 2 weeks later for Covid blood clots, emergency surgery, almost died, but here I am. Then a week later my son was seriously injured in a diving accident. 6 months away from home btw Delray Medical Trauma and Shepherd Center in Atlanta for 5 months. He is currently paralyzed and just came home last week. Getting used to our new life. Very sad and devastated. So no creativity coming out of this head for now. I’m in the process of getting my home handicap accessible and hope to move my studio back to my original spot in the garage by November. I want to get back to create and taking care of myself again." And she did!
| Recently, Skarie's name popped up on a Martin Artisans Guild page, giving me another chance to catch up on her life and her art, best done with a Q&A. She and her family — husband Erik, and sons Jonathan, 21, and Alexander, 17 —have lived in Stuart for 11 years. |
When we met, what was your job/business? We met at the metal clay class in vero back in 2008. I currently work as a cardiac pharmaceutical rep during the day, wife and mom, and part time artist.
Does your husband still have a band? Tell me about it. My husband became a musician, bass player about 10 years ago. He had heart failure and memory loss due to complications. He had other medical issues and was no longer able to have a regular job. He picked his bass back and formed a band called Carnivalle, a heavy metal band. This is a show band. He also play w Shovelhed on a regular basis, this is a classic rock band based in Vero. They have over 7K followers. He also was invited to play w John Beauvoir at Sweden Rock 2022. He also worked as a movie extra and music video extra.
What were you doing artistically when your son had his accident? Nothing. I had an artist block for about 3 years prior to his accident. Then his accident in September 2021, we returned home to FL in March 2022. Then I broke my leg in May 2022, which woke my artistic juices back.
| |
Describe the accident and aftermath. In September 18, 2021 I received a call from the Boca Fire Rescue that Jonathan was in a serious accident, dove into a shallow pool and broke his neck. He was paralyzed from the neck down. He spent 6 weeks at trauma ICU at Delray Medical. And then moved to a specialized spinal cord injury hospital, Sheperd Center in Atlanta. He recovered arm movement and is able to operate his manual chair on its own. We came back in March 2022. The aftermath, all aspects of our lives and our family lives are completely upside down, all the time. The accident is very financially draining so we have to continue to work as we take care of him the best we can. Art is what keeps me normal. |
How has it affected your life and your art? It is devastating. Physically and mentally challenging. We are the full time care takers and there is always someone at home w him 24/7. He is fully dependent on us. Both my sister and sister in law are very helpful w transportation to school and rehab. My younger son also helps a lot. He is home school and is now starting his own online jewelry business that allows to stay at home and earn an income. Jon is planning to go back to school full time in August w the help of handicap programs available from the State and School. I broke my leg in May 2022, this is when my creative juices came back. I was home w Jon and a broken leg. So I decided to build back my studio in October 2022. I took about 5 weeks, and Adori open its doors again in January 2023. I joined several art groups and started creating and exhibiting.
The stunning neckpiece shown here was made from Skarie's husband's discarded bass strings. It will be entered in an exhibition at Lighthouse ArtCente

I read a post about hummingbird feeding the correct way on Facebook and decided to check with my old bird friend, Ray Brown, of Talkin’ Birds.
"All the experts recommend ONLY table sugar (4 to 1) and never any of that other stuff. Most hummingbird feeders have red on them, and, yes, putting red dye in the mixture is also a no-no. (And yes about frequent changing of liquid.)
"If you have feeders, PLEASE USE ONLY PLAIN WHITE SUGAR in your mixture of 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. No organic or raw or brown sugar, no powdered sugar, no honey, no artificial sugar. Use plain white sugar/water mixture which is most similar to actual flower nectar. And no toxic red color liquids!
"Change the sugar water mixture every couple of days, especially during high temperatures, as it will start to ferment if it sits out for days on end. If you can't or won't do this, please do not put out a feeder at all."

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)
Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining"!
